Community Highlights: Meet Robert Brown of Vybe Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Brown

Hi Robert, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My passion for music started at a very young age. I grew up playing Percussion instruments, the clarinet, and composing music while in high school. Growing up I was heavily influenced by the various types of music I was introduced to while growing up in Los Angeles. After high school , I attended San Diego State where I was on the drumline, and I was often the one curating the playlist for parties, fraternity parties, and campus events. After college, I quickly started working local parties, high school dances, restaurants, and local events to build my resume. This would lead me to working at LA based radio Station 93.5 KDAY where I was hired on the street team. I was lucky enough to become one of the Saturday Night DJs on 93.5 KDAY, In 2020, I became the Monday Thru Friday Night show mixer on Mega Hits 97.1 in Santa Maria. I also started Vybe Agency, a LA based DJ agency with my good friend Bryan Delatorre. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to open for many artist while working in nightlife such as OT Genasis, French Montana, Chris Brown, Too Short, & Eric Bellinger. In 2019 & 2020 I was able to open for comedic Legend Mike Epps On his comedy tour, Platinum Comedy Tour. Currently I am continuously working on expanded Vybe Agency, while also carrying a full DJ calendar throughout Souther California, Phoenix, and now Las Vegas.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working in the nightlife scene while being a DJ on the road has many obstacles. I would be lying if I said it was a smooth road. There’s times where you’re away from your family on holidays. Dealing with the politics of nightlife such as promoters, other DJs, managers, and patrons. Having to control a crowd of 100-300 people on a nightly basis can give you anxiety at times. Working in the fast paced environment while dealing with many variables is always a challenge.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
It’s a DJ Agency that focuses on providing great DJs at private & corporate events, and nightclubs, There’s 15 talented DJs on the roster that has a wide range of skill, and musicality when it comes to the art of DJing. I think what sets our roster apart from others is the wide range of music our DJs can play on any giving night. Every DJ on the roster can play everything from Bad Bunny to NSYNC to YG and many more. The one thing I’m most proud of brand wise is how far we’ve come in a short amount of time. Right now there’s a vybe DJ playing in a major venue every weekend across SoCal. There’s a few of our DJs mixing on Radio shows weekly. One thing I would love for reader to take away from this article is that we are a great group of DJs that are hard working, humble, and professional.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Ive been lucky enough to have a few people in my corner. My college professor Dr. Andrew Maz was a big mentor in my development. He showed me the right way to handle the business of music, while having a realistic approach to daily life. I can say the most important thing is honesty. Being honest with yourself and the people around you is crucial. Try and find someone who is gonna be honest with you regardless the situation. Someone who will guide you down the right path while also being your friend and understanding your goals and mindset.
