Hi Nekaya , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into real estate began with encouragement from my father, who urged me to pursue my real estate broker’s license. Unlike many, I didn’t start as an agent but went straight into becoming a broker, which set the foundation for my career. Real estate is a family business, and carrying on the Carter name is something deeply personal and important to me.

After obtaining my broker’s license, I founded Carter and Carter Inc., a brokerage that not only offers real estate services but also includes mortgage services. Being one of the few Black women-owned brokerages in California and across the U.S., I’m proud to lead a diverse team dedicated to educating, elevating, and empowering our clients on their homeownership journey.

The legacy I’m building is one my father envisioned, and even though he has passed away, I am committed to continuing the work he inspired. This journey is about more than just real estate—it’s about creating opportunities, building wealth within the community, and honoring my family’s legacy.

In addition to my brokerage, I also run a nonprofit, 2.18 Vision, which supports women who have lost their fathers, helping them navigate their grief journey. This work is incredibly meaningful to me, as it allows me to connect with others on a deeper level and offer support during challenging times.

Through dedication, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose, I continue to build on the foundation my father laid, striving to create a lasting impact in both my professional and personal endeavors.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been smooth, and one of the most profound struggles has been coming to terms with my father’s passing. My journey into real estate started with his vision. He encouraged me to get my real estate broker’s license, but I didn’t fully grasp or embrace that vision until after he was gone.

It’s been difficult knowing that I’m finally living out the dream he had for us, yet he’s not here to see it or to walk this path with me. Not being able to share this journey with him is something I struggle with every day. Even though I didn’t get to do real estate alongside him at this level, I feel his presence with me in everything I do.

His vision has become my mission, and I carry his legacy forward in every aspect of my work. It’s both a source of strength and a reminder of what’s been lost. I strive to honor his memory and the dream he had by building something meaningful and lasting.

One of the aspects I’m most proud of is being one of the few Black woman-owned real estate and mortgage brokerages in the country. This distinction is important because representation matters, and I believe it’s crucial for people to see someone who looks like them succeeding in this industry. It reflects our dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion, which are core values of our brand.

Carter & Carter, Inc. is also known for its deep roots in the community. We actively engage with the local community through educational workshops, events, and our nonprofit initiatives. My nonprofit, 2.18 Vision, further extends our mission by offering support to women who have lost their fathers and providing empowerment through events like Women Elevating Women. This holistic approach—blending business with community service—is something that truly differentiates us.

Absolutely! There are a few resources that have been instrumental in helping me stay focused and motivated, both in my work and in life.

One book that stands out is The Seven Levels of Communication by Michael J. Maher. It’s an incredible resource that delves into the importance of building meaningful relationships and effective communication, both of which are essential in the real estate industry. The principles in this book have not only helped me grow my business but also foster deeper connections with my clients and team.

On a day-to-day basis, I make sure my social media timeline is filled with motivation and positivity. I believe that what you consume affects your mindset, so I intentionally follow accounts and pages that inspire, uplift, and encourage growth. It’s important to me to surround myself with content that aligns with my values and keeps me focused on my goals.

Asana is another key tool that has been a game changer for my business. It helps me stay organized, manage projects, and collaborate effectively with my team. As a broker, there are always a lot of moving parts, and Asana allows me to keep everything on track while ensuring that nothing falls through the cracks.
