Today we’d like to introduce you to Maxwell Jen.
Hi Maxwell, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my career at a university hospital as an emergency medicine physician where I was quite happy practicing and teaching medical students & resident physicians. Then in 2020, COVID hit which meant that all of our missions (teaching, research, outreach, etc.) other than delivering healthcare services completely disappeared. Even on that point, I didn’t feel like I was making much of a difference as a physician as none of us knew how to treat or stop this never-before-seen virus. It felt futile; I couldn’t teach, couldn’t effectively treat, and couldn’t really do anything meaningful.
What was a clear pattern, however, was that the young, fit, and healthy, were generally doing far better reflecting an old adage and one that’s most true for the practice of medicine: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Preventing illness and decline is far superior to trying to treat it. Also, a bit selfishly, I found counseling individuals on how to prevent disease a much happier interaction than disclosing to a family for the umpteenth time that their family member was now dead from a COVID infection.
And so in late-2020/early-2021, my team and I founded OHMI, an anti-aging and wellness practice, built on the core belief that long-term health and wellness is the key to longevity and happiness. Though many of our patients initially come with the goal of simply looking younger and more beautiful, we always frame that desire in the belief that you’re only going to look and feel your best when you’re healthy and happy and use this approach to encourage and motivate our patients to pursue healthier lifestyles. Not a day goes by that I’m not counseling patients on diet, exercise, sleep, and stress.
Very fortunately, perhaps in the wake of the COVID pandemic, this resonated with enough people that we’ve been able to build a thriving practice. Since our initial founding, we’ve tripled our treatment space, and have been invited to speak at both national and international forums about our approach and experiences. What I’m most proud of is that I’ve returned to my teaching roots with OHMI’s educational arm–which we’ve simply called the OHMI Academy–where we educate interested practitioners about the benefits of an anti-aging and wellness approach in their own practice and educate patients and laypersons about topics related to how to lead a healthier lifestyle
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In short, it hasn’t been the smoothest road. First, the health and wellness industry in Southern California can be charitably described as oversaturated, which meant there would be significant headwinds to starting a practice. Additionally, when we first started (and even now to some extent), prospective patients would compare us to medspas and then wonder why we weren’t offering things like dermal filler and peptides. The simple answer is that I don’t believe that either of things, based on current research and safety data, are actually conducive to long-term anti-aging, health, or wellness goals. That surely cost us significant chunks of revenue. Fortunately, over time, we’ve been able to build a practice around patients who value our honesty, integrity, and consistency in our core belief of pursuing sustainable long-term health and happiness. I optimistically and perhaps somewhat foolishly believe that we are on the right side of history and that the pursuit of good health will always be something valued and never go out of style.
We’ve been impressed with OHMI Anti-Aging Center, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
OHMI Anti Aging Center is a regenerative aesthetics and wellness center focused on long term skin health, prevention, and personalized anti aging care. Unlike traditional med spas that focus on selling trending devices or quick cosmetic fixes, OHMI takes a medical and regenerative approach by creating customized treatment plans based on each patient’s skin condition, lifestyle, and long term goals.
In addition to patient care, we also operate OHMI Academy, our regenerative aesthetics training center dedicated to educating physicians, nurses, and aesthetic providers in laser technologies, combination therapies, and long term treatment planning. Education and advancing the industry are a major part of our mission.
What sets us apart is that we focus on restoring and supporting long term skin quality and healthy aging rather than chasing trends. We are proud to be building a brand centered around science, education, personalized care, and regenerative medicine.
How do you think about luck?
I attribute the vast majority of my life and business to good luck.
