Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Martinez
Hi Maria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always felt a calling to work in a field where I could help others and contribute to society in a meaningful way. My journey began when I was just 8 years old, migrating to the U.S. as a refugee from El Salvador with my mom and sister. The transition was overwhelming—I was thrown into a new culture, struggled to learn a new language, and found myself grappling with depression and anxiety at such a young age.
Those early experiences shaped me deeply. I understood firsthand how challenging life can be when you’re navigating mental health struggles, especially when they stem from circumstances outside of your control—like trauma, and other big life transitions. That’s why, when I started my mental health practice, I wanted it to be a space where people could find healing and hope. My focus has always been on helping those who, have faced life’s toughest challenges and need support to reclaim their strength and resilience.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely had its challenges. Pursuing higher education—earning both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees—was incredibly difficult when no one in my family had done it before. As the oldest sibling, I had to navigate everything on my own, from figuring out financial aid to understanding the complexities of college life. While my mom and siblings were always supportive, there was no roadmap for me to follow.
Starting my private practice brought similar struggles. Once again, I found myself in uncharted territory, being the first in my family to establish a business. Without a mentor or prior knowledge, I had to learn everything from the ground up—often while juggling the stress of being the first.
Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t change a thing. Every obstacle has been worth it because I know I’m paving the way, not only for my siblings but also for my daughters. It’s empowering to show them that even when the path is uncertain, you can carve your own way forward.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Healing Blue is more than just a mental health practice—it’s a space filled with compassion, purpose, and soul. We deeply value the trust our clients place in us, knowing they’re sharing their most vulnerable moments—their fears, shame, and worries. It’s an honor to walk alongside them on their healing journey, offering unwavering support, belief, and hope as they rebuild their sense of self.
Our primary focus is trauma and anxiety, two challenges that are often deeply intertwined. We’re especially passionate about serving the Latino community, where these struggles are prevalent yet frequently overlooked. What sets Healing Blue apart is our culturally sensitive approach, our commitment to creating a safe and empowering environment, and the genuine care we bring to every session.
At Healing Blue, we believe in the resilience of the human spirit, and we’re proud to be a source of healing and transformation for our clients.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe the demand for mental health services will only continue to grow. With the increasing political divides in our country and the pervasive effects of toxic stress in our fast-paced lives, the need for support and healing is more crucial than ever.
What’s truly inspiring is the shift I’m seeing among young people. They’re seeking therapy not just to address immediate challenges but to proactively build a strong mental health foundation for their future. This proactive approach signals a cultural change, as the stigma around mental health continues to fade.
I’m confident that our industry will remain essential and that it will expand in exciting ways. As society continues to prioritize mental health, we’ll likely see even more innovative approaches to therapy, greater accessibility, and a broader cultural embrace of emotional well-being as a fundamental part of a thriving life.
