Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Nguyen.
Hi Leslie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My first nursing job out of school was at a laser hair removal clinic. I really wanted to join the world of aesthetics and thought this would be a good steppingstone. Although I loved the job itself and interacting with the clients and making my clients very happy by eliminating all their body hair and ingrown and road rash, unfortunately the company that I worked for didn’t really treat the clients very well. We were so busy at that clients were constantly overbooked, a lot of of them were unable to finish and complete their appointments, and mostly a lot of brand new inexperienced nurses would burn clients and they would have to come to me to try to remediate the situation. I left to look for a better job and ended up in the operating room doing orthopedic surgeries. One day, my best friend Cassandra found a laser hair removal machine on one of those buy nothing Facebook groups and got super excited and asked if I wanted her to grab it so that I could do laser hair removal on her and other people from home. We got super excited, but unfortunately it was an IPL machine which don’t work very well and it’s a machine that I’m not familiar with. However, that sparked this interest and motivation and my friend asked me why don’t I just start my own Laser hair removal business from home? I did a bunch of research and started looking into it. Mistakenly relied on ChatGPT too much lol and started tearing up my room, thinking I could operate this business from home. After some more research, I realize that the medical board would not allow such business to operate from home because it is considered a medical procedure. I got my legal and business structure up-to-date and looked for a suite as well as a bad ass $100,000 Candela, laser machine and the rest is history business has been booming ever since I opened to my surprise.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Hell, no, it was not a smooth road lol there were a ton of troubles. The first one like the first mistake I mentioned in question one was how I thought that I could operate this business from home like a nail tech or a hairstylist. I started tearing up and remodeling my room as if I was going to accommodate clients here luckily after more research, I realize that I couldn’t do that. Some other struggles were finding the machine that I wanted figuring out if I wanted to purchase or rent, the machine is very expensive so I had to do a ton of research and call a bunch of companies also finding a suite was a battle at first I wanted to just share share a suite with someone and rent part-time. However, after I met Franchesca at 3D Beauty Clinic which is where I’m at now I knew that it was fate and I went all in renting the suite full-time even though I still had my full-time job at the OR. I also struggled maintaining a full-time OR job while launching a side business, which left me with very little sleep and a lot of stress also I had to restructure my business in a legal sense so I had to contact my lawyer and make some changes with them, which ended up costing me money however it was very important to me that I did this all above board and legal. Oh another mistake I forgot was that I didn’t check the electrical requirements of my machine. I thought it was just a regular outlet plug into the wall, but boy was I wrong. I needed serious electrical work done that was unplanned. Luckily the person I was dating at the time was an electrician and he helped me out. However, our relationship was already going down the drain long before this and having him help was more of a burden than anything. We ended up breaking up right in the midst of me launching my business, so it sent me on a emotional toll for sure. He also was very negative complaining that I was on the phone too much and telling me that my business expenses were too high. Luckily I didn’t listen to a word he said in business is doing great and I’m thriving after our relationship ended. No hard feelings to him. I think just a lot of entrepreneurs will get a lot of unsolicited advice and negativity and it’s important to tune it out and stick to your instinct
As you know, we’re big fans of Pink Diamond Laser. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Pink Diamond Laser is a solo RN operated and owned business in Orange California. That helps men and women get rid of unwanted hair through laser hair removal. Not only do I help clients get rid of unwanted hair but also raise their self-confidence by eliminating their ingrown hairs, road rash, and helping with hyper pigmentation. Very soon we’re also adding another service of PRP/PRF injections, which will help regenerate skin under eye and hair restoration. What makes Pink Diamond Laser stand apart is that it’s not run by a bunch of doctors and providers who aren’t hands-on. I am the owner and operator and the nurse giving you your service. I also wanted to make laser hair removal, accessible, and affordable so that most everyone could enjoy being hair free. Pink Diamond Laser is also different because of its brand. We are edgy, humorous, and relatable. My tagline is smooth AF, which is displayed by the custom neon sign on the wall of my suite. I talked to my clients like I talk to my friends, and I want everyone to feel welcome and know that Laser hair removal can be affordable and pain-free.
Any big plans?
Yes! Lots of plans like I mentioned earlier adding more services like PRP/PF. Also, hopefully Botox and filler in the future, hoping to expand and hire more nurses and give them a job that is not only a rewarding, but fun and something to look forward to coming to every day. Nurses work their ass off and I’d like to create an environment. That’s a little more lighthearted. I’ll still delivering amazing exceptional service I’d also like to coach and teach each other nurses down the line on how to open their own business. That’s probably the most exciting thing that I’m looking forward to because I’d love to share my knowledge and experience. I’m no smarter than anyone else. I’m just willing to take the risk and bet on myself.
