Community Highlights: Meet Keturah of Khloe ModHouse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keturah.

Hi Keturah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a tomboy for much of my life and often dressed in sweats, hoodies, and sneakers. It wasn’t until my freshman year in college at North Carolina A&T SU that I began to find a more feminine sense of style. Upon my entry into the corporate world, I found interest in creating a new esthetic for my new job. I was always putting together professional but trendy looks to wear to the office. I’d get tons of compliments which turned into women in my office requesting my assistance to help them discover their sense of style and esthetic.

My volunteer work began to get more requests from family, friends, associates, and co-workers. My then boss suggested I start a fashion brand and expand my skills into an actual business. It wasn’t much longer before the Khloe ModHouse brand was birthed in 2014. At first, I was hesitant but deep down, it had been something I wanted to do since I was about 12-years-old.

I come from a family of women who wear “fashion plates” so fashion and style has always been in my face. In fact, my grandparents owned a women’s boutique in Washington, DC back in the 80’s and I’ve always desired to continue that legacy.

I created Khloe Modhouse to offer women a place to shop the latest trends in fashion, alongside hand-picked, timeless pieces that could produce an outward confidence like no other. My plan has always been to make women feel great, proud, and excited about their clothing and accessories selections. I feel that sometimes we see stylists dress celebrities in the most amazing pieces and trends, but some women don’t always have budgets that would get them certain looks. My store and brand makes it easier to achieve trendy looks but at a more affordable price for the everyday-woman. I am super proud that I’ve expanded into having international clientele. I’ve also most recently expanded my creative juices and have designed my first of many handbags that are sold exclusively from my online shop.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an entrepreneur has not been easy for me because I had to learn much of what I know from trial and error. Learning how to create a website, take product pictures, run multiple social media accounts, package and ship orders, all on my own has left me frustrated some days. To reduce the frustration, I’ve learned to create systems that streamline my business to help it flow better for the consumer and for myself.

Also, the fashion world is ever-changing and sometimes it’s not easy to be creative as often as I would like. Constantly having to stay abreast of changing trends and technologies has been a struggle area for me, however, I’m building a team of people to help expand my current systems. I think ultimately, once you have the right teams and systems in place, things go a lot smoother.

All of my trials and errors have been worth the experience because I’ve grown my baby from only selling to people in the DMV area to having customers order my products from Bermuda, Europe, and Jamaica. KM is an international brand now baby!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Khloe Modhouse (KM) is a women’s ready-to-wear brand, with pieces designed and/or sourced in-house. Most recently, I’ve decided to transition my brand into a handbag company which specializes in creating bags, totes and accessories. Our first design which has the affirmation “Speak Life” on it, launched in May 2021. The response and support of this transition has been phenomenal. My community knows me well for speaking life into everyday situations via my podcast, The She Speaks Life Podcast. Living through Covid-19 really opened my eyes to see that more positive images, positive spoken word and hope is needed in our communities. I wanted to merge my fashion brand with my personal lifestyle of speaking truth and life which divinely created my first handbag design.

What sets me apart from others is that I am unapologetically myself no matter what anyone thinks of my ideas, thoughts, and lifestyle. I am unafraid to speak the truth and my community respects me a lot for it. We live in a society that encourages us to stay in boxes. I am never afraid to go against the grain even if I am the only one doing so.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of my transition season into designing handbags. It’s a change I’ve longed for and it has opened up doors for me in terms of expansion and more visibility as a smaller fashion brand.

I am in the process of growing my handbag collection this year. The new collections will be filled with many vibrant colors, materials, and designs so please be on the lookout late summer/early fall for more release information.

Right now, the Speak Life affirmation mini tote is available at www.khloemodhouse.com. This bag is so special to me because I live by this affirmation and I want this message to get out to as many people possible.

All of my customers who’ve purchased it are in love with it and I know future customers will be too!

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me most is displaying a life of integrity. Living honestly and having strong moral principles is key to living well. I want my two children to see that good things come to you when you a full of integrity.
