Today we’d like to introduce you to Keturah Bishop.
Hi Keturah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Chicago and decided I wanted to be a photographer as a teenager in the ‘90s. After studying photography in college, I worked in both hospitality and the photo industry, soaking in invaluable lessons in hustle and exceptional customer service.
Transitioning fully to the photo industry, I immersed myself behind the scenes, freelancing while managing studios for commercial photographers. In 2012, I took the leap and moved to NYC. Living there was like a rebirth for me. I explored the city, especially its art and museums. I managed a studio, mastered photo retouching, collaborated with major clients, and embraced new roles – even meeting my husband and starting a family within five whirlwind years!
Nashville brought fresh inspiration. I reignited my love for photography, ventured into videography with my husband (a documentary filmmaker), and founded a photo & video production company with him. Business podcasts and books sparked a realization: I craved working with my fellow dreamers, both artists and entrepreneurs alike. Thus, my focus shifted to personal branding and headshots, which also aligned with my original passion for portraiture.
Now, a year into our LA journey, I’ve connected with some amazing clients and witnessed my work featured in renowned publications. I’m nticipating the opportunities and growth that 2024 holds!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think one of the biggest challenges for me has been zeroing in on the things I’m most passionate about and having the confidence to pursue them – stepping away from more reliable, behind-the-scenes roles and taking center stage with my business.
Being a self-employed creative is always a risk, and I have to give my husband a huge shout-out for always believing in me and encouraging me to pursue the artist’s life. Having a business mentor and accountability group has also been invaluable!
It’s been a winding path, but things have really clicked into place for me, and I’m feeling excited about the future!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Of course! I’m a Branding & Headshot Photographer. I work with Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses to create stunning branded images that elevate their brand and help attract their ideal clients.
My mission is to not only create beautiful images that my clients are excited to use but to provide them with a stress-free, fun, and even empowering experience. I achieve this through careful planning & prepping, wardrobe & prop guidance, beautiful lighting, guided posing, AND I provide a hair and makeup artist at every shoot. I never want my clients to be worried about how to pose or what to wear. I guide them every step of the way!
My goal is for my clients to feel supported and safe with me. One of my favorite things is when they see their images at the end of their shoot – I love seeing the looks on their faces when they see how amazing they are! My hope is for them to leave their shoot with a renewed sense of inspiration and confidence, both in themselves and their brand! (And also armed with a ton of new marketing material that they are so excited to use!)
In addition to my custom branding sessions, I also offer Headshot Mini Marathon Days once a month. These are a perfect bite-sized offering for folks who aren’t quite ready to invest in a full session or just want to dip their toe in before committing to a larger shoot with me. My Headshot Day clients still experience the same high level of service and walk away with two beautiful, retouched photos in multiple formats!
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’m excited to connect with and support my fellow entrepreneurs here in LA! I’m always curious to hear about the best networking groups and learn about what folks are working on. My inbox is always open to anyone that wants to reach out!
