Today we’d like to introduce you to ELIZABETH KOBLIHA.
Hi ELIZABETH , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Collecting antiques started as a childhood hobby, with visits to flea markets and antique malls alongside my mom. My home always reflected this passion, adorned with vintage decor and unique vignettes. When downsizing a few years ago, I realized my collection was substantial enough to open my own shop. After navigating some challenges, I secured a large, affordable space. The 7000-square-foot showroom initially seemed overwhelming, so I invited friends and colleagues to join me in renting the Historical Bungalow Building in Downtown Long Beach, built in 1920. That was over 11 years ago, and we’ve continued to thrive. Being my own boss has brought me immense happiness.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t been entirely smooth. Initially, a corridor beautification project caused significant disruption, with our street closed for six months. Persuading customers to park further away and walk to the shop was challenging, as Southern Californians are accustomed to parking right in front. Starting up was also financially tight; I didn’t have investors or crowdfunding. However, my landlord’s support allowed me to increase rent gradually, providing time to find great tenants. As in any big city, we’ve faced issues with unhoused individuals and occasional vandalism, including graffiti and recently, a broken front door. We are trying to stay positive and look forward to the city’s improvement.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Long Beach Vintage Etc. opened its doors in 2014 with fewer than 10 dealers. Now, eleven years later, our 7,000 square foot showroom is brimming with an amazing assortment of vintage goods from over 50 vendors!
“Our business provides a unique shopping experience for locals and visitors alike,” says owner Elizabeth Kobliha. “We sell oddities, antiques, and one-of-a-kind clothing and fashion spanning over 150 years. Our dealers are diverse, the atmosphere is eclectic, and our staff is friendly and helpful. Most of all, our store manager Likho, the shop cat, provides excellent customer service.”
Our building has changed hands several times over the last 100 years, most notably to Mr. Jaffe. During his ownership, Mr. Jaffe unfortunately passed away in one of the back rooms, but his spirit remained. To this day, our store is recognized as one of the most haunted buildings in Long Beach. Countless psychics, mediums, and ghost hunters have visited for this reason. While Mr. Jaffe’s spirit is not malicious, he is very active, especially at night.
