Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Alba-Ferguson.
Hi Amanda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
One of the biggest things that shaped my journey was my background in dermatology. I spent 16 years working in the dermatology field, starting when I was just 21 years old. During that time, I had the opportunity to work alongside incredible doctors and nurses, assisting with everything from medical dermatology and skin cancer procedures to lasers and cosmetic treatments. That experience gave me a very deep understanding of the skin—not just from a beauty perspective, but from a true skin health perspective.
Over time, I realized I wanted to create a space where results-driven skincare and genuine client connection could coexist. I loved the clinical side of skincare, but I also saw how many people were struggling with confidence, inflammation, acne, pigmentation, sensitivity, and aging concerns without really understanding their skin or knowing where to start. That’s what inspired me to transition into esthetics and eventually build Skinfluence Esthetics.
What started as a passion for skin health slowly evolved into a business centered around corrective and regenerative skincare. I wanted Skinfluence to feel different from a traditional spa experience—more personalized, educational, and intentional. My goal has always been to bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and luxury self-care, while helping clients feel truly seen and supported throughout their skin journey.
Like many business owners, the road hasn’t been perfect. There were moments of self-doubt, long hours, and learning curves, especially while building a business from the ground up. But every challenge helped shape the vision even more clearly. Today, I’m incredibly proud that Skinfluence Esthetics has become known for results-driven treatments, advanced skin education, and creating customized experiences that help clients build confidence in their skin again.
At the heart of everything I do is the belief that healthy skin is life-changing—not just physically, but emotionally too. Being able to combine my dermatology background, my passion for esthetics, and my love for helping people has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. Building Skinfluence Esthetics has been incredibly rewarding, but it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many small business owners, there were a lot of challenges behind the scenes that people don’t always see.
One of the hardest seasons for me was in 2024, when I experienced some medical issues that forced me to step back from work for a period of time. As a solo business owner, that was really difficult because when you’re not physically able to work, everything pauses with you. It challenged me mentally, emotionally, and professionally, but it also gave me a new perspective on resilience, balance, and not taking my health for granted.
Another major challenge was building a clientele from the ground up. I’m a first-generation business owner, so I didn’t come from a family of entrepreneurs or have a blueprint to follow. A lot of what I’ve built has come from learning through experience, trial and error, consistency, and simply refusing to give up. There were moments where growth felt slow, moments of self-doubt, and moments where I questioned whether I was doing enough.
But those struggles also shaped the business into what it is today. They taught me how important community, education, authenticity, and perseverance really are. Every obstacle pushed me to become not only a stronger business owner, but also a more compassionate provider for my clients. I think those experiences are a big part of why Skinfluence feels so personal and intentional today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Skinfluence Esthetics. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Skinfluence is a results-driven skincare studio focused on corrective and regenerative skin treatments. My background is unique because before becoming an esthetician, I spent 16 years working in dermatology alongside doctors and nurses, assisting with medical and cosmetic skin procedures. That foundation heavily influences the way I approach skincare today — blending clinical knowledge with a personalized, luxury experience.
At Skinfluence, we specialize in treatments designed to improve overall skin health and confidence, not just create a temporary “spa glow.” We focus on concerns such as acne, pigmentation, rosacea, skin sensitivity, aging, and barrier repair through customized treatment plans, advanced facials, HydraFacial, collagen induction therapy, regenerative treatments, chemical peels, and carefully curated professional skincare.
What sets us apart is the combination of education, customization, and intention behind every treatment. I never wanted Skinfluence to feel like a one-size-fits-all facial studio. Every client’s skin journey is different, and I take a very individualized approach based on their skin condition, lifestyle, goals, and long-term skin health. I think clients really value that they feel heard, educated, and cared for here.
I’m also very proud of the environment and brand we’ve built. Skinfluence has evolved into something that feels both clinical and welcoming — results-focused without losing the self-care experience. I wanted to create a space where people could come not only to improve their skin, but to feel more confident and comfortable in themselves.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Skinfluence has grown organically through trust, client relationships, word-of-mouth referrals, and genuine passion for helping people. The business was built from the ground up with a lot of heart, persistence, and resilience behind it, and I think that authenticity is something clients truly connect with.
More than anything, I want readers to know that Skinfluence Esthetics is about healthy skin, education, and long-term results. We’re not chasing trends or quick fixes — we’re focused on helping clients understand their skin, invest in their skin health, and feel confident in the skin they’re in.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think entrepreneurship itself is a risk. Starting a business, especially as a first-generation business owner, means stepping into a lot of uncertainty without really having a roadmap. I wouldn’t necessarily describe myself as someone who takes reckless risks, but I do believe in taking intentional risks when they align with growth, purpose, and long-term vision.
One of the biggest risks I took was leaving the stability and structure of working in dermatology to fully pursue building Skinfluence Esthetics. I had years of experience and security in the medical field, so transitioning into entrepreneurship was both exciting and terrifying. There’s a huge difference between being skilled at what you do and learning how to actually run a business.
Another major risk was continuing to invest in the business even during difficult seasons, including after dealing with medical issues in 2024. There were moments where it would have been easier to play it safe, scale back, or question whether I should continue pushing forward. Instead, I chose to keep building — investing in education, equipment, treatments, branding, and creating a space that truly reflected the vision I had for Skinfluence.
I also think risk shows up in smaller ways every day as a business owner — raising prices when you know your value, simplifying a menu even if it means letting go of familiar services, expanding into more advanced corrective treatments, or building a brand that feels authentic to you instead of following every trend in the industry.
My perspective on risk has changed a lot over the years. I used to think risk meant fearlessness, but now I think it’s more about trusting yourself enough to move forward even when there are no guarantees. Some of the best things that have happened in my career came from decisions that initially felt uncomfortable or uncertain.
At the end of the day, I believe calculated risks are necessary for growth. You learn a lot about yourself through those moments — your resilience, your adaptability, and your ability to keep going even when things don’t happen overnight.
