Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Campos.
Hi Wendy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in San José Costa Rica. About 17 years ago I started my career in the beauty industry by accident, my best friend back in high school, she asked me to be her model for her first class in beauty school, so I went there and immediately fell in love with beauty, I ended up joining the class and graduating with her, but years later I decided to add more to my education, I became a nail technician. I opened my own beauty salon and ran it from 2012 until 2018, I closed it because I moved to Denver Colorado.
When I was in Denver I realized that my license from Costa Rica was not accepted and I had to go back to cosmetology school. I went to Paul Mitchell the school in Denver, so it was a bit challenging for me trying to fit in as a student after being a business owner, during this time in school I found a new passion, makeup! I got into this makeup world because in beauty school they had a spooky competition during Halloween and I wanted to be a winner, they had more than 1500 entries nationwide and I was one of the 9 winners, in the superhero category. This gave me the impulse to persuade my passion.
As soon as I graduated from Paul Mitchell I moved to Los Angeles California, I went to MUD makeup school, I can say this was one of my greatest decisions and I loved every moment there, I learned so much and also I was able to do what I love the most. I never imagined being where I am right now. I had the pleasure to work with amazing people who have given me the opportunity to show my passion for this, I have opened new doors and become better every day. Every opportunity is a great opportunity to learn and grow my name out here.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely, the biggest obstacle was the language. Coming from a Latin country where my first language is Spanish, practicing my English was very difficult, but the people around me helped me a lot, this has been one victory for me.
Another challenge was being able to find opportunities, I had worked for low pay and sometimes just no pay at all, just because I needed the experience and the pictures. Being part of this industry is challenging in general, but it is up to you if you overcome every obstacle and take advantage of it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love making people happy. This goes from an everyday look, events, weddings or on set. I love clean beauty or natural look makeup, I like making people look like their glamorous version without changing a lot of how they look, enhancing their own beauty. I’m well known for second-skin makeup and natural look. I’m very proud of making women and men loving themselves, I love encouraging the bare faces because we are all beautiful and we need to love our bare faces and then enhance the beauty with makeup.
I think outside the box, I’m very meticulous with what I do, I love listening to my clients and bringing their look alive, I am a strong believer in quality and not quantity, of course this is different on set because I have to do both, my clients enjoy how great I treat them and how special I make them feel. Being responsible, reliable, clean and professional is part of who I am, also my work ethic is well known in this industry, this is what sets me apart from others.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
As a kid, I used to visit my cousins there are 7 kids total, we used to play in the forest and have a lot of fun, we used to harvest fruits and had that as snacks or lunch. Having fun without being worried about the world, having fun as wild kids is a great memory., being connected with them.
