Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicki Hicks.
Hi Vicki, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I actually fell into this by accident.
I was in sales for about 30 years, and a friend of mine had a band where the singer got fired last minute. He was trying to figure things out last minute, and I could step in and help book a couple of venues and get things organized. It wasn’t something I had planned — it just came naturally . I just stepped in to help.
But once I did, something clicked. I realized I had a natural instinct for it — kind of like spotting talent, putting the right people together, and knowing what would work. From there, it just started growing. One connection led to another, and before I knew it, people were coming to me to help book bands and put shows together.
I’ve been working closely with places like the Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach for a few years now, helping build out their live music lineup and create consistency week to week. It turned into something much bigger than I expected — not just booking bands, but really understanding what makes a night successful, what draws a crowd, and how to match the right band to the right room.
Now everything runs through Secret Agent Entertainment, and I work with multiple venues and bands across Southern California. It’s been very hands-on and very real — I’ve learned a lot just by doing it.
Right now, I’m focused on growing what I’ve built and expanding into new venues, including Huntington Beach. It’s been an unexpected journey, but it’s one that feels very natural and I’m excited to see where it goes next.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road — not even close.
Since I didn’t come from the traditional music industry side, I had to learn everything as I went. There was no handbook, no structure— just real situations, real people, and figuring things out in real time.
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing both sides — the venues and the bands. You’re constantly trying to make sure everyone is happy, the nights are successful, and expectations are met on both ends. Not every show goes perfectly, and you learn quickly how to adjust, problem-solve, and keep things moving no matter what.
I’ve also had to navigate situations where people don’t fully understand the work that goes into booking and building a consistent music program. — It’s not just putting a band on a stage— it’s relationships, timing, promotion,Marketing and knowing what will actually draw a crowd.
But honestly, those challenges are what helped me grow the most. I’ve developed a strong instinct for what works, how to pivot when something isn’t right, and how to keep pushing forward. It’s been very hands-on, and every challenge has made me better at what I do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in booking live music and building out entertainment programs for venues, but it’s a lot more than just filling a calendar.
What I really focus on is matching the right band to the right room and creating nights that actually work for the venue, the band, and the crowd. It’s about understanding energy, timing, and what people want to experience when they walk in the door.
I’m known for being very hands-on and for having strong relationships with both venues and artists. I don’t just book a show and walk away, I stay involved, make sure things are running the way they should, and adjust when needed. I also have a strong instinct for talent, and knowing what will draw a crowd.
What I’m most proud of is helping build consistency at places like the Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach. It’s not just about one good night — it’s about creating a steady, reliable music program that people come back for again and again.
I’m also really grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them. I kind of fell into this, but being able to grow with a place like the Lighthouse Cafe and be part of building something that works has meant a lot to me.
What sets me apart is that I didn’t come from a traditional path. I built this through real experience, learning as I went, and being directly involved in every part of it. I understand both the creative side and the business side, and I know how to bring those together in a way that actually works.
At the end of the day, I care about the outcome — not just booking a band, but making sure the night is successful.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I think the biggest thing is that I genuinely love what I do. I didn’t set out to be in this industry — it found me and I’ve just followed it and kept building.
I really care about creating great experiences for people. Whether it’s a packed night with a high-energy band or just a solid, feel-good atmosphere, I want people to walk in, have a great time, and want to come back.
I also think it’s important to support local talent. There are so many great musicians out there, and being able to help connect them with the right opportunities is something I don’t take for granted.
Right now, I’m excited about what’s ahead, growing into new venues, expanding into new areas, and continuing to build something that people recognize and trust. Honestly, I feel like I’m just getting started.
