Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Newton.

Trevor Newton

Hi Trevor, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
About 5 years ago, I decided to throw on a costume and attend San Diego Comic Con and the D23 Expo. I met some amazing “cosplayers” who shared with me that there are several non-profit organizations in Southern California that support the local community by providing costumed characters for charitable events. I was immediately excited about how to join them and excited that I could inspire or uplift others through cosplay. To say this changed my life would be an understatement. Since that time, I have joined 4 different organizations and participated in countless community events and hospital visits. In addition to that, I have made so many great friends and connections that I would not have experienced otherwise.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I had never really put myself “out there” in the public eye prior to cosplay. Learning to deal with the negative comments on social media was very difficult at first. Also, as an older cosplayer, trying to get and stay in physical shape has been challenging. However, it has been a great motivator!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In addition to cosplaying, I am also an amateur photographer. This hobby has provided countless opportunities to work and hone my photography skills. Some of my work can be seen on my Instagram page: hawkstarphotography.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Always push forward through obstacles, and do not let others slow you down. Everyone deals with self-doubt and insecurities. We tend to become our own biggest roadblock which prevents us from possibly experiencing so many amazing things. I wanted to cosplay for years but never felt comfortable and when I finally did, my life was changed in amazing ways.
