Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry Sanvictores.
Hi Sherry, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a young adult, I wanted a career where I could help people and the medical profession seemed like the ideal choice. I attended UCLA as a biology major right after high school. I didn’t know exactly the focus I wanted to pursue but knew it would be in healthcare. A fellow student told me about an informational event about nursing on campus but nursing wasn’t really on my radar since I assumed I would just be changing bedpans and diapers all day. I realized after attending this informational event how wrong I was about the nursing profession. The nurses at this event had impressive educational backgrounds including nurse educators, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives and nurse researchers. After my attendance, I decided to pursue a nursing education, receiving my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from USC and a Master’s of Science in Nursing with a focus in the nurse practitioner track from UCLA. I can happily say I’ve been a nurse practitioner in dermatology going into my 20th year of practice and I continue to enjoy the journey of helping people.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The pursuit of any professional goal inevitably includes challenges. As I was pursuing a full-time graduate degree, I continued to work as an RN in labor and delivery. Some weeks, I was completely exhausted from doing full days of student clinical rotations only to turn around the next day to do a 12-hour shift in the hospital. In the end, all the sacrifice was worth it because I achieved my goal of becoming a nurse practitioner for independent practice. My advice to young people starting off in their journey is to never lose sight of your goals even though the journey can be fraught with challenges. These are usually short-lived in comparison to the fulfillment of doing something you love long-term.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I function as a dermatology and aesthetic nurse practitioner for both a dermatology and plastic surgery practices. As a licensed nurse practitioner in California, I can diagnose, manage and treat patients for a variety of dermatological and aesthetic concerns. In addition to full-time practice, I’m an Assistant Clinical Professor for the preceptorship program for the UCLA graduate nursing students. My passion within the dermatology specialty is the aesthetic component, and as an advanced injector having 20 years of experience, I believe in the “artistry of injectables” to achieve natural results for my patients. I do this by tailoring outcomes for every patient’s unique aesthetic goals. What sets me apart is my approach to beauty is accomplished through strategic and judicious use of non-surgical treatments to promote one’s natural and ideal proportions rather than overinflation and non-expression that seem to dominate the “beauty” landscape of Los Angeles. It certainly matters where you go.
In addition, I always seek the most up to date evidence-based techniques and guidelines through continued medical education to effectively treat patients for a variety of general and cosmetic dermatological issues.
How do you think about happiness?
I’m happy when my patients are happy and satisfied with the outcomes achieved. This helps me to validate my commitment to do my best to achieve exemplary care for all the patients I see.
