Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergei Pyuro.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started learning video production back in High School. Took TV classes, volunteered at a local access station and got my first part time job at Active Video, a local production company, where I got to learn from Dan Hnatio, a great friend, mentor and life long video educator. I wasn’t interested in still photography at first, but in college I took one photography course, and quickly realized photography was a great art form for me. I like creating visuals, and a lot of video production courses were about writing, so that’s how I got started. Ended up taking the rest of photography courses that my college had to offer!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When you do something for a long time, you go through changes. You change, the photography business changes, what it means to be a photographer changes, so my struggle is that I don’t like change…
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As I was saying, over the years my photography journey took different turns and shapes. I used to live in Boston and I was mostly working in a studio, because you only get 2 months of good weather. I did mostly portfolios for models, a few album covers for a girl band, a fashion campaign, a book and billboard photographs for a sports club.
Since I moved to LA, I try to be out on location as much as possible. California is the most beautiful place to be a photographer in. Here I made connections with amazing local creatives like the amazing make-up artist Alla Yakymova and a celebrity fashion designer Ani Hovsepyan. Together we have created gorgeous images.
I specialize in model photography. I do portfolio photo shoots for new models to help them get started in the business.
Over time, I discovered, that for some women photo shoot is like therapy, and that was a cool discovery. I don’t mind being a “photo therapist” since I’ve seen many times how a good photo shoot experience makes a positive impact on someone’s self esteem and consequently quality of life.
So over the last 20 years since I’ve started doing photography, at first it was just about camera, lens, exposure, experimenting with lights, shadows, and finally at this point, it became about looking for the inner beauty in my subject. Something not everyone sees. Most people do a good job hiding their true self most of the time. So I want it to come out in a photo. I’m convinced that’s the reason my photos are different and have such a profound meaning for the people I shoot.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Nothing specific that comes to mind… I have always taking the long way of trying things out and learning that way.
