Today we’d like to introduce you to Sepi Balini.
Hi Sepi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I moved to this country from Iran when I was 14 years old. I had no idea where I was moving or what my life would be like. I went from a school of all girls and 18 students to University High School with 3000 students boys and girls mixed. I remember I had behind a tree on my first day because I was so scared. I immediately found myself enjoying art at school. I was told to take AP art because I had the eye for it. Painting was my way to cope with whatever lofe was throwing at me. Fast forward to 2016 when I got my BA from UCLA, I started a makeup focused account on Instagram and it quickly picked up followers. I was offered a job at Anastasia Beverly Hills and I realized how much i loved helping people feel their best. I worked next Bedford Breast center, where many of their cancer patients would stop by my work and ask for help filling in their brows since they lost the hair due to chemotherapy. That is when I fell in love with brows. I came across Microblading, a semi permanent tattoo that mimics hair strokes. I took a Phi Brows course and attended their Master class in Serbia. I started working next door to Bedford Breast Center and had the honorable chance to give cancer patients beautiful brows. I took part in a program called pay with a smile, made for those who lost their brows due to cancer and other diseases. It truly made me love what I do even more because I could give back. In 2022 my own mother was diagnosed with Breast cancer and underwent her healing process at Bedford Breast Center. I am now married with 2 children and I get to do what I love and make my own schedule to accommodate being a mother.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Very tough road. I moved here in 2007not speaking a word of English. Taking over handling everything for my family. My father had a heart attack in 2010 which was beyond scary. Finding out about my mom’s cancer diagnosis when I was only 2 months postpartum was very tough.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I get to share my passion of art and makeup through my account @makeupbysepi and turn my love into work through microblading.
How do you define success?
