Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruben Urena.
Ruben, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in South LA, music has always been a part of my life! Around 2006 I was a freshman in High School and that’s when I picked up various early DAWS like the now-defunct Kristal Audio Engine (which is now Studio One), and an early edition of Mixcraft. During those days I just recorded my guitar and some vocal ideas for them, I probably have more of those early guitar projects than I do now. Although I did use Fl Studio 9 during that time, I had no electronic music influences. I listened to during high school was 90s rock music and progressive metal, it helped me get through a lot of dark times. It wasn’t until 2009 that I started using FL Studio more and more and made a lot of experimental electronic music, most of them are still uploaded on Soundcloud (don’t try to find them). I dabbled in many hobbies (I even was in a couple of rock bands) and had eyes on many career paths for quite some time. Over the years, I made a lot of songs for fun, and not once did I think of music (artist/producer) as a potential career. Well to be fair, I did want to be a music therapist, since it included psychology, which was one of my favorite subjects in school.
I discovered electronic music around 2014, when I heard artists/producers like Clams Casino and Bonobo, and fell in love. I was working an office job at the time and all I was thinking about was the next paycheck. It was not until 2017 that I discovered a house artist named Darius and various electronic RNB, lofi artists along the way, which completely inspired me to chase the dream of being an Artist myself. Then in the Summer of 2019, I released my first single “Moonrise. Compared to many, I started late but things in life always happen as they need to. And since then, many of my songs have been put on the radio and I’ve been written about in indie blogs and online magazines. I have a strong social media presence on Instagram and my following has been growing steadily. The only thing I haven’t done much of is marketing, which is what I plan to do for 2023 and beyond and I’m excited about what’s in store for me and my fans.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I dove into this music thing headfirst. It hasn’t been a smooth road at all! I basically started this in the midst of a pandemic and the music world that everyone knew beforehand, had died. TikTok blew up and we all as creators have been on a ball and chain ever since. The ever-changing algorithms of social media and the musical output of a passionate musician just don’t go hand-in-hand.
So many unrealistic expectations for an artist nowadays, we are not content creators, and we don’t want to be. Art takes time. Real passionate art takes time. The music industry really sucks. It has sucked for a long time, artists continue to be taken advantage of by labels, streaming platforms, promotion companies, by everybody really. The only thing that keeps me going is knowing that I can change someone’s life for the better, in 3 minutes. It’s almost like I did end up being a music therapist.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known as Simpatico, I’m an electronic music artist and music producer from Los Angeles, CA. I’m known for making chill (beats) music in which I combine my favorite electronic genres such as lofi-hip-hop, RnB, and future-bass together. I also plan to do house music in the future. I’m most proud of one of my songs called “Tonight” ft Ivylesson which I see as a musical achievement in every aspect.
Not only did I produce it myself but I actually co-wrote the lyrics and the vocal melody of the verses, which came out as I envisioned. I’m also proud of not giving up because this is the most difficult career choice you can ever make, for real. What really sets me apart is that I’m Latino from South LA doing this type of music, it’s unheard of. Musically, I combine a lot of my favorite genres which gives me a unique sound, while my creativity and my background give me a little more flavor.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Never giving up. Tunnel vision all day. Being patient. And enjoying the journey, not the destination.
