Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Jack Sarner.
Hi Robin , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a Los Angeles–based abstract expressionist whose work explores memory, emotion, and the layers of lived experience. I grew up in Miami, surrounded by water and nature, which sparked my curiosity and early sense of wonder. As a kid, I was always making things, drawing, arranging scenes, and experimenting visually before I even knew what composition was.
After earning a degree in Art Education with highest honors, I spent several summers in the Grand Tetons, where the vast landscapes shaped my connection to nature and the physicality that still drives my work. My journey has taken me through different chapters, teaching, working in the corporate world, raising a family, but art has remained my throughline. Now based on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, I’m continually inspired by the vibrant Los Angeles art scene and the community of artists around me. The proximity of wilderness keeps me grounded in my love of nature, which continues to shape and inspire my work.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a straight path. After college, life led me into other roles, building a career, a marriage, and raising a family. Those were intentional choices that required my full focus, and for many years, art had to live quietly in the background. But I’ve always believed that every season has its purpose. Now that my children are grown, I’ve returned fully to my creative practice, and it feels like coming home to myself. The years away gave me perspective, patience, and depth, qualities that now fuel my work with a renewed sense of urgency and gratitude.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work in abstract expressionism, creating large-scale mixed media paintings and works on paper that explore memory, emotion, and healing. Paper and ephemera are central to my process, fragile yet resilient, they carry traces of the past and remind me of enduring strength. Mixed media and the element of chance allow me to let go of control and let the work reveal itself.
Viewers often notice the energy in my gestures and mark-making, which convey emotion and presence. I’m proud that my work is a true reflection of who I am, layered, intuitive, and honest. Returning to art full time has let me embrace process over perfection, and that authenticity is what sets my work apart.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as staying true to my creative voice and continuing to grow as an artist. It’s less about recognition and more about engaging deeply with my process and making work that resonates. Success also means being an example for my children, showing that commitment, hard work, and pursuing what you love are all worthwhile. Returning to my practice full time and finding joy in it feels like success to me.
