Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel And Jackson Anderson.
Hi Rachel and Jackson, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Rachel and Jackson first met while in the Marine Corps back in 2019. Since they have dated, gotten married, have two amazing fur babies, and have had many adventures both within the Marine Copra and across the world.
Runaway with Ray & Jay started pretty organically. We’ve always loved traveling, but for a long time it was just something we squeezed into PTO days while balancing being in the military and normal cooperate jobs. A few years ago, we realized we were spending a lot of our free time planning trips, finding better flight deals, researching hotels, building itineraries, and helping friends figure out their own vacations. At some point, we thought, “why not actually document this?”
We started posting travel content focused on international trips that felt attainable for people like us, but not luxury influencer travel that feels completely out of reach. Our goal was to show that you can still have incredible, bucket-list experiences while traveling smart and getting good value for your money.
In the beginning, the account was honestly just experimentation. We tested different types of videos, storytelling styles, and travel topics while learning social media as we went. Some videos completely flopped, while others unexpectedly took off, especially our Japan content. That’s when we realized people connected with our mix of practical travel advice, humor, honest opinions, and experience-first recommendations.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting the account up and running was definitely not the smoothest. They do not tell you how hard it is to actually run an Instagram account. Our biggest struggles were trying to be consistent with uploading, making content that resonated with people, and be strategic with travel and gathering content. Even once we found the groove, there were still some bumps, but that is with anything in life.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
For Ray, she works for a defense contractor that creates Apps for military equipment. Many of her achievements have had direct impacts to the military, specifically the Marine Corps, growing efficiencies and making Marines better.
For Jay, he is still in the Marine Corps as an Artillery officer, but about to transition out. Many of his proudest achievements is watching his Marines grow and be successful.
Both of us are super proud of our time in the Marine Corps and the lives we were able to help and impact.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
For Jay, spending time with his older brother who was in the Marine Corps as well. He was his role model and inspiration to join himself.
For Ray, going on Disney cruise when she was little definitely sits with her as a core memory.
