Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Mendo.
Hi Oscar, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got my start in the carpet cleaning industry right out of high school, working for a large carpet cleaning company. I enjoyed the work, especially getting to meet new people and traveling to different neighborhoods throughout the area.
When my daughter was born in 2009, my priorities started to change. Being a father made me realize how important it was to have more flexibility with my time and be there for my family. I had always thought about working for myself, and becoming a dad gave me the motivation to make it happen.
In 2012, I took that leap and started Family Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning. What began as a way to build a better future for my family has turned into something I’m really proud of. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to build lasting relationships with customers, many of whom have been with me for years. It’s been a lot of hard work, but I wouldn’t trade the experience.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. Running a small business comes with its share of challenges, and I’ve learned over the years that you have to be prepared for just about anything. There have been long days, late nights, unexpected situations, and plenty of lessons learned along the way.
I remember receiving a late-night call from a customer whose toilet had overflowed, leaving them with a pretty big mess. They were understandably overwhelmed and didn’t know what to do. I knew they were stressed, and sometimes just having someone show up who knows how to handle the situation can make all the difference.
Experiences like that have reminded me that what we do goes beyond providing a service. We’re often invited into people’s homes during situations they weren’t expecting, and sometimes what they need most is reassurance that everything is going to be okay. Being able to ease some of that stress and give them peace of mind is something I take pride in.
Owning a business hasn’t always been easy, especially when it comes to balancing work and family life. But I’ve learned that being dependable, treating people with kindness, and genuinely caring about your customers are what build lasting relationships. Those are the things that have kept me going all these years.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Family Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning is a family-owned business that I started in 2012. We provide professional carpet, upholstery, tile and grout cleaning services for both residential and commercial customers throughout the San Gabriel Valley and surrounding communities.
What I enjoy most about this business is the relationships we’ve built over the years. Some of our customers have been with us for more than a decade, and we’ve had the opportunity to watch families grow, welcome new homeowners, and work with local businesses that continue to trust us with their cleaning needs. We’re also proud to have provided commercial cleaning services for businesses and organizations such as Porto’s Bakery & Cafe, Toyota, and the City of South El Monte.
I think what sets us apart is the personal attention we give our customers. We’re not a large company where you’re just another appointment on the schedule. We take the time to listen, understand what our customers need, and treat their homes and businesses with the same care and respect we’d want for our own.
One accomplishment I’m especially proud of is being voted a Nextdoor Neighborhood Fave for five consecutive years, from 2022 through 2026. Knowing that the people in our community continue to recognize and support our business means a lot to me. It’s a reminder that the relationships we’ve built and the trust we’ve earned over the years really do matter.
At the end of the day, I want people to know that we’re a local, family-owned business that genuinely cares about the people we serve. We’re grateful for every customer who has supported us and helped us grow into the business we are today.
How do you define success?
To me, success isn’t necessarily about how much money you make or how big your business becomes. It’s about being able to provide for your family, doing something you enjoy, and being proud of what you’ve built along the way.
When I started Family Carpet back in 2012, my biggest motivation was my family. I wanted to create something of my own while having the flexibility to be present in my daughter’s life. Looking back at where I started and how far we’ve come, I’m grateful that I took that chance.
I also measure success through the relationships I’ve built with my customers. When someone calls us back year after year or recommends us to their friends and family, that means a lot to me. It tells me that we’ve earned their trust, and that’s something you can’t put a price on.
At the end of the day, success to me is knowing that I’ve worked hard, treated people right, and built something that my family and I can be proud of.
