Check Out Onaje Ferguson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Onaje Ferguson.

Onaje Ferguson

Hi Onaje, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Lomita CA, a small suburban city in Los Angeles County. As a child, I always gravitated towards the arts, anything from sculpture to acrylic on canvas I experimented to find what worked for me. As I got more familiar with various mediums I found myself consistently coming back to digital art.

Despite my passion for art, my focus was lacking for the majority of my adolescence. It wasn’t until my junior year of high school when my anxiety was at its peak, I found art very therapeutic, I could get lost in a sketchbook during lunch period and feel a sense of calm. I figured that I should capitalize on all the time spent drawing and get a bit more serious about learning and improving.

After getting involved with a few school and local art events I realized I’d developed a bit more as an artist but I still didn’t know where to specialize. Everything really came together when my Aunt contacted me and asked me to create a logo for her start-up business, Organic Services. I enjoyed the process of creating digital art that brings people’s vision to life. Creating something that really gets them excited about their business as a whole. My wonderful girlfriend and fellow artist Valeria Velazquez helped me tremendously from that point on finding other clients to work with.

I’m at a place now where I feel comfortable working as a freelance digital artist and taking on any project. I’m very excited for the future and I feel fortunate to be able to turn art from a way to cope with a difficult time to a job that helps me connect with others and make cool artwork.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d definitely say my severe anxiety in my adolescence that caused me to self-isolate. That was a big barrier, but also in a way led me down the path of taking art more seriously and improving more quickly.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in digital art, specifically through the software programs Photoshop and Illustrator. I think what sets me apart is my illustrative approach to logos. Some logos tend to look a bit stiff and rigid in the digital medium, but I want to bring more to it and explore different ways of presenting a brand.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is getting the best possible result I’m capable of for the person I’m designing for. When someone is really happy with their new logo design it makes me happy as well. Especially seeing the end result in physical form is super gratifying.

Outside of work, I’d say spending time with my girlfriend out on the trail riding our mountain bikes together as well as dinners with family.
