Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Terrell.
Hi Natasha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was originally born in Los Angeles but grew up in the Coachella Valley. I always had a strong passion for music at a young age and started piano lessons when I was seven. I remember joining choir in elementary school and that really began my love for singing. When I was twelve, I joined a professional youth band sponsored by The Boys and Girls Club of the Coachella Valley and grew my love of performing with a band. I then joined the Academy of Musical Performance and was a student for six years and recently a student mentor last summer. As well as being a national anthem singer at Acrisure Arena for the Coachella Valley Firebirds hockey team. As I got older, I really loved music because of the connections I made. Some of my closest friends have been through music and playing in bands together. I also found my love for songwriting from singing over the years. Songwriting has given me the opportunity to write down my feelings and express my thoughts into my own songs. I’m currently a sophomore at Chapman University. I was able to get a spot in the Commercial Music Ensemble my freshman year and perform originals with a band. I’m consistently writing music and crafting my artistry.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There’s definitely been some setbacks especially being an artist at a young age. There’s always going to be people’s opinions and self-doubt with being in the creative field. I can also be critical of myself sometimes and it’s been something I’m learning to let go of. It’s especially competitive being in the music industry with so many people trying to pursue music. It took me the longest time to share my songs in front of people. My mom was the first person to hear my songs and even then it was difficult for me. I didn’t know if my songs were good or if people would like them. It was a new experience for me at the time. I finally got the confidence when I was selected to perform my original for the Academy of Musical Performance final showcase. All the students voted and I remember feeling so surprised my song was selected. It was the first time I performed my music in front of others besides my mom. I’m really grateful for that moment and it allowed me to pursue my songwriting and collaboration with other musicians. I really want to form my own band out in Orange especially now being away for college. So I’m hoping to be able to start something in the future.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My artistry and music falls into “singer-songwriter” with a blend of pop-rock. I love story telling through my songs and really focus on my lyricism. A lot of my music is about heartbreak, love and adolescence. I just turned nineteen recently so I’m still experiencing life and new changes. I’m always inspired to write about my own experiences and past unresolved feelings.
I released my first single “Midnight Blues” when I was seventeen. It was a “sad-girl ballad” and I was feeling very one-sided on a past situation. It was one of those songs where I knew this is the one, this was going to be the debut. I remember being so excited and nervous putting my music out into the world. I had a lot of support for my music debut and I’m so grateful.
I recently just released my sophomore single “Fake Love.” It’s an angsty song that blends indie and alternative rock. It’s about fake intentions and really calling someone out. I’ve been wanting to release this one for the longest time. It’s different from my first single but I think it shows my growth as an artist and songwriter. I also recently got featured in Coachella Valley Weekly which is something I’m so proud of. I’m so grateful to be able to share my music locally.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I see the music industry definitely growing and changing. So many genres are rising to popularity like hyperpop, shoe-gaze and sleaze. I think with the 21st century and our use to technological resources, music is going to thrive in many unexpected ways. I personally love the edge and authenticity artist’s today are bringing like 2hollis, Turnstile and Between Friends. Music is constantly evolving and I’m constantly inspired by so many artists of all kinds. I think that’s what sets music apart the most, is that there is no right or wrong. There is no guideline to making music, it’s all based on creativity.
