Today we’d like to introduce you to Moses Lawi
Moses, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Moses Lawi as a filmmaker, I specialize in both directing and writing, with a focus on creating grounded and authentic films that offer new and unique perspectives to audiences.
My background includes being born in Tanzania and growing up bilingual in English and Swahili, while being raised in Phoenix, Arizona. I pursued my passion for film by studying at Arizona State University, where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in film media production in 2020. Since then, I have been actively involved in various film projects, continuously honing my craft and skills as a filmmaker.
Currently, I am fully dedicated to my career as a filmmaker, dividing my time between Los Angeles and Phoenix, Arizona, where I am actively involved in both cities.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As an independent filmmaker, I often find myself navigating a challenging and unpredictable journey. Despite the obstacles, I am committed to pursuing my passion and pushing forward for myself and those who have faith in my work. One of the most significant struggles I face is the difficulty in finding individuals who share the same belief in my creative vision as I do but I’m lucky to have the friends and family I have today who support me. Additionally, securing the necessary funding to bring my ambitious film projects to fruition remains a major obstacle. This ongoing quest for support and resources is just the world of the indie filmmaker, you always just have to push yourself every day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create films that delve into narratives that are often overlooked by mainstream media. These stories are deeply rooted in authenticity and are told from a multitude of perspectives, offering a comprehensive exploration of the diverse facets of our world, whether positive or negative. I strive to challenge the audience to confront their inner selves by presenting narratives that have different outlooks of the world. As a person born in Tanzania, my unique life experiences have shaped my worldview, leading me to perceive the world not for what it is, but for what it has the potential to become.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe that one of the most important characteristics someone can have is the capacity to love, because it is the driving force for an artist to deeply connect with their craft.
