Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Rees.
Hi Morgan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I obtained my bachelor’s in Kinesiology from Indiana University when I was 27 years old (I was a late bloomer). Seven months later I moved to LA and was hired at an independently owned gym in West Hollywood as a personal trainer. After ten months, I moved on to build my own personal training business in the same area! It has been about three years running my own personal training business now for. Of course, all of these steps had influence from individuals I had met in Los Angeles as well as furthering my own education as a trainer and growing my social media.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I would say the biggest “bump in the road” was when I was fired from my first personal training job at the independently owned gym. I absolutely felt like I had failed and was basically left alone to figure out how to pick myself back up. I had many clients that were more than willing to follow me wherever I went which helped me put a business together much sooner than I expected (within one month). Throughout this period of time, I lived in constant anxiety as to whether or not I was going to be able to continue to work as a personal trainer in Los Angeles. Looking back, I didn’t need to be afraid. I am great at what I do and that yields results and consistent clients. I do think it was this anxiety and fear that carried me through that time and enabled me to become successful.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an independent personal trainer in Los Angeles California. I pride myself on my specific approach to fitness and the way in which I train my clients. I do believe that every human body is different and should be assessed and programmed for in a unique way. Because of this, I have to put a lot more energy into each client getting to know their body and movement patterns. I specialize in weightlifting, mobility, and corrective exercises. I have some clients that want to put on muscle whereas others want to just learn how to perform basic movement patterns regardless of muscle building. Some want “toning” exercises and others want a healthier, more stable lifestyle. I have amazing client retention because I approach my training from a lifestyle perspective and not a 6-8 week rush to lose weight. We create a lifestyle together that works for them long-term.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I truly enjoy the diversity in personality and the types of humans I’ve met since moving here. People have come from far and wide to live in LA including myself. I have come across individuals with stories I never thought I’d have the opportunity to hear. I also love the focus on health and wellness that exists here (unfortunately in unhealthy ways too). There is almost always a healthy option of food to choose at a restaurant. I would say the issues with unhoused individuals and the difficulty in finding genuine friends are my two least favorite aspects of LA. I don’t feel that LA has done an efficient job taking care of those who are on the streets and are mentally ill or clearly do not have the funds to live in an apartment.
