Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Luna.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hiiiiii, my name is Mayra Luna and I’m a professional makeup artist! I have been a makeup artist for 11+ years, I love what I do! I started as soon as I got out of high school; makeup basically chose ME! Growing up I was a little chubby girl with super curly hair, I admired my bratz dolls so much! I always had this image of myself in my head, I never thought I could look like my dolls especially since my hair was so curly and my eyes were so small! I discovered makeup when I was in 8th grade, in middle school, I remember my grandma did a cat eye liner on me for Halloween. I felt so BEAUTIFUL; the amount of confidence that I had with just eyeliner was insane, I wanted to feel like that everyday, so i did.. 🙂 As I got into high school, I would do my makeup everyday. My grandma gifted me my first colorful MAC cosmetics pallet, I loved it so so much that I took it to school with me everyday! During lunch my friends would always ask me to put eyelashes on them, so I would! When i would go to class, I would do my friends eyeshadow in art class. As i got older, closer to graduating, a lot of girls started asking me if i could do their makeup for prom and they would pay me. I would do it and my grandma was very supportive of this idea for me to make some money as a teen. After high school, I got inspired by all the makeup gurus and I was amazed at their success of them being makeup artist; I wanted to be just like them, so I did! I told myself that i would be one of the best makeup artist in the world! I took this direction and never looked back, sometimes you can’t have any plan B’s in life, you need to have a plan A, give it your all and just go for it! Do everything in your power to be the best and give it your all, keep your passion for it alive <3333
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I went to makeup school, got my credentials, I was sooooo excited to get my career started! The world wasn’t ready for me though, I got told “no” so many times, I had gotten a lot of interviews and they wouldn’t give me the job or even a chance. This made me feel completely shattered and bummed out. The main thing the worked out for me was being my own boss and booking clients on my own. Even though people wouldn’t give me the chance or opportunity, I was always positive and had a good attitude towards everything that came my way. I knew that at the end of the bumpy road, it would get smoother. 🙂
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Im a professional Makeup Artist and beauty content creator; I do makeup for any occassion which includea bridal, quinces, date nights, or even birthdays. I specialize in dramatic and soft glams, I get heavily inspired by bratz dolls and I also specialize in eyeliner! My clients come to me because i make them look fierce and powerful. I also create beauty content by making small videos of my makeup looks or show my favorite products + review different makeup brands.
I’m super proud of the fact that I’m a full time makeup artist — that I’m able to manage my business all on my own. It’s NOT easy! When you have passion and so much love for your job, NO ONE can compare to your work and what you do!
My creativity shows show in my work, I make sure that I commit to my clients. 🙂
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
When it comes to my career, I’m not just a makeup artist. I put on multiple hats. The way I would define success for myself is through my clientele, I’m not just their makeup artist. I play important roles to each of these women or males. I enable a friendship or relationship with them where we can both be comfortable with each other; the fact that my clientele shares private information with me, we laugh together, we give each other advice, or sometimes my girls just need someone to hear them out and listen to whatever is on their mind. My clientele trusts me enough to be there for them on very important days, they trust ME to make them feel like a baddie. Success isn’t about the amount of money that is made, it’s about the clientele that I’ve build strong relationships with, because without them, I wouldn’t be a business. It’s about the love and trust that we’ve built together. As long as I’m doing what i love, I’m already successful in life!
