Check Out Maisha Oliver’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maisha Oliver.

Hi Maisha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m originally from the suburbs of Claremont, California, and my journey has been a mix of faith, grit, and manifestation. When my parents separated, I had to leave my school in the middle of my sixth-grade year. I still remember my last day so vividly — I sat on a stool in front of my class wearing my teacher’s leather jacket and a pair of sunglasses, telling everyone I was moving to Hollywood to become a star.

Looking back, I realize that was my first act of manifestation. I had no idea that such a big transition from Claremont to South Central LA would shape so much of who I’d become.

I started out in a small salon in South LA, learning the fundamentals of hair and customer care. Eventually, I took a leap of faith and relocated to Beverly Hills, even though it meant leaving behind a full clientele. It was scary, but I knew there was more in store for me. I joined Elgin Charles Salon, which at the time was the only Black-owned salon in Beverly Hills and truly the crème de la crème of Hollywood in the 1990s. That’s where I perfected my craft and began the journey as a celebrity hairstylist.

Over time, my work evolved from styling to storytelling behind every client, every project, there was something deeper happening. I began to see beauty as a form of healing, and that realization planted the seed for what would later become Beauty Mind & Wellness™

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth. There were seasons of financial struggle, self-doubt, and sacrifice. Leaving a secure clientele to pursue a dream in Beverly Hills wasn’t easy. I had bills, responsibilities, and no guarantees, but I trusted my vision and knew that if I could just get in the room, I would make my mark.

That determination led to one of my biggest milestones, opening Stitch, my first partnered salon in West Hollywood. That’s where I truly evolved and stepped into my identity as a celebrity hairstylist. Owning a salon was exciting, challenging, and full of lessons. I balanced the demands of my growing career with raising my family, pouring into both with everything I had.

Then life shifted again. I became pregnant after what I thought would be my last child, and it was a high-risk pregnancy. Feeling overwhelmed and realizing my health had to come first, I made the difficult decision to close the salon and focus on my well-being. Once I recovered, I returned to the Rodeo Collection in Beverly Hills to rebuild and realign my path.

Just as I was finding my rhythm again, another obstacle came. The pandemic hit our industry hard. Overnight, production stopped, salons closed, and everything I’d built seemed uncertain. I had to sit with myself and ask, what would I do if this ever happened again? That’s when I decided to expand my path and become a certified life coach.

Then came the Hollywood strike, and again, everything paused. It forced me to see that my purpose had to be bigger than any one job or title. That’s when I created The Beauty Mind Method™, a framework that bridges beauty, psychology, and wellness to help others navigate the same uncertainty I was facing.

The ups and downs of maintaining a TV/film career, managing celebrity clients, and building a new business were intense. But every challenge reminded me that reinvention is part of my story. My life has been about evolving and helping others find beauty and balance in their own transitions too.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for my artistry, my energy, and without question, my black hat.

Years ago, I owned a salon on Melrose in West Hollywood. One day, paparazzi were outside taking photos of one of my celebrity clients. I was wearing my usual black hat, and the next day those photos were everywhere. Friends and family kept calling, saying, “Maisha, we saw you!”

A few days later, while walking through the mall, someone stopped me and said, “I recognize you by your hat.” I was so startled that I threw the hat away that day.

But over time I realized the hat wasn’t just something I wore, it had become part of my story. People would message me saying, “I saw your black hat go by on a show,” and that’s when it clicked: I am Maisha Oliver, Behind the Black Hat™.

It became more than a style choice; it became a symbol of identity, resilience, and the woman behind the scenes, the artist, the mentor, the motivator.

If there’s one thing I hope readers take away from my journey, it’s that your story matters, even the parts that felt uncertain or unseen. Every chapter, every setback, and every pivot can become part of your purpose. Don’t be afraid to evolve, to start over, or to redefine success. The beauty isn’t just in what you create, it’s in who you become along the way.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Absolutely! I love collaborating with individuals and brands who align with purpose, creativity, and wellness. I’m currently partnering with brands, production teams, and educators who are passionate about creating healthier, more mindful spaces behind the scenes.

I also host Beyond the Glam™ workshops and speaking engagements that focus on resilience, leadership, and self-worth in creative industries. My mission is to build community and connection through beauty, mind, and purpose. Whether it’s coaching one-on-one, collaborating on wellness initiatives, or speaking to creative professionals about mental health and balance, I’m always open to working with others who share the same vision.
