Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Mo.
Hi Lee , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Baltimore, MD, and from the very start, my life was impacted by the ripple effect of drugs in the Black community. My mother, addicted and homeless, lost custody, and at just 18 days old, I was put into a foster-care home, straight from the hospital. From there, I would be removed at 1 &1/2 years old and placed into a permanent home with a new adopted family, after the environment I was in was deemed unfit. The home I grew up in was headed by an older, strict and religious single mother from South Carolina, and the house was full of children who had also been displaced from their families, just like me. There, I was given the foundation and morals I would need in the world. But it was tough. Music, which was the most common art form in our home, church, and school, became my outlet, passion, and saving grace. It would be the vehicle to get me through all of life’s stages from adolescence to college and beyond.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road getting to where I am today. Being adopted caused many challenges of identity and self esteem. Music was one of those bonding forces that allowed me to form familial relationships and develop friendships, which would root me and give me a sense of who I am.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a singer, musician, and a creator. I am proud of my ability to transmute the conflicting issues of life into beautiful art and help make something of the lemons life gives us. I know I am a powerful and creative voice, and I love lending my gifts to projects and supporting other amazing artists. Some of the people I’ve worked with are Doja Cat, Cory Henry, 6LACK, Donald Glover, Lizzo, and Bruno Mars.
