Check Out Laila Hazel’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laila Hazel.

Laila Hazel

Hi Laila, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Laila Simone Hazel and I am a senior psychology major studying at Southern University A&M College. I chose an HBCU to better support my personal growth and professional skills for a passion I never knew I had. Although I came to Southern to earn a bachelors in psychology, I fell in love with media. I joined the Office of Student Media to clean up my writing skills as a novice journalist, and with more practice I was only a writer but I was appointed by the Director of Student Media to serve as the official podcast producer and host of award winning podcast “Jag-Talk”. Through my process of becoming fully dedicated to media, I was able to be featured on radio station Max 94.1 and hosted my first screening for Amazon Prime Tv. But prior to my dreams to develop a broad career in podcasting and radio, I was continuing my growth as an entrepreneur. LensesbyLai is an online sunglasses boutique that I began June 2020. I wanted to inspire young people to represent themselves in the way that makes them most confident. Promoting vibrant range and quality lenses that can be shipped to your door. From my home in California, I was able to ship orders to as far as Canada. Becoming a staple in the media and business world is a dream of mine that I will forever chase. From a young age, I have always felt a profound connection to the idea of service. The notion that I could make a difference in someone’s life, particularly in their formative years, has inspired my ambition to become a counselor dedicated to aiding the youth. My journey to this career goal has been shaped by meaningful experiences with children and a deep desire to help them navigate life’s challenges while fostering their personal growth.

My passion for working with children began during my early volunteer work at a local community center as a youth dance instructor. It was there that I first witnessed the transformative power of guidance and mentorship. I interacted with children from diverse backgrounds, each carrying unique challenges and aspirations. Many were grappling with self-doubt, struggling with self identity, or facing instability at home. I realized that by offering a listening ear and a supportive presence, I could make a difference in their lives. These moments solidified my belief that children flourish when they feel seen, heard, and valued.

My academic journey has also played a significant role in shaping my career goals. As a psychology major, I have developed a deep understanding of human behavior and the factors that influence emotional well-being. Courses like child development, abnormal psychology, and counseling techniques have equipped me with the theoretical knowledge necessary to address the needs of young people. Additionally, my role as a research data analyst in a cognitive research lab has allowed me to explore how early experiences shape cognitive and emotional outcomes. This work has deepened my appreciation for evidence-based approaches to counseling and reinforced my desire to create interventions that truly resonate with children and adolescents.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would not say that the journey has been easy. As an out of state student, transitioning into Baton Rouge was a difficult process for the first year. I had a hard time trying to navigate where I fit in. and how I could use my skills to help me advance. I noticed once I got to school that the world is truly what you make it and there was nothing I couldn’t achieve if I wanted it bad enough. Once I was able to adjust, I was able to create my own network and receive opportunities to further my career in media and continue producing properly in the classroom. The biggest challenge I have had to face would be my own mindset. I realized the effect of negative self talk is the lack of productivity. Oftentimes, I did not believe in myself and felt as if I had less of a chance to create anything on a wider scale, but I can’t tell you why I felt this way. My parents, have been the foundation for me to build discipline and continue to support me in every way they can. Balancing all that I want to pursue at times can be very stressful but I learned the value of doing tasks in sections so I no longer feel overwhelmed.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a rising podcast host and personality, and I produce and host two podcasts: Unfiltered Podcast and Jag-talk. Unfiltered Podcast dives into open, honest discussions about important issues, with past episodes covering topics like challenges faced by women in the fashion industry and disability representation. On Jag-talk, I highlight topics related to student life and experiences at Southern University, connecting with my peers on issues they care about.

Beyond media, I’m also a research data analyst in a cognitive research lab, where I assist with conducting experiments and debriefing subjects. It’s rewarding to work in a field that blends my academic background as a senior psychology major with hands-on research, which contributes to understanding human cognition. As a podcast and radio host, I was taught valuable communication skills that I believe will serve me well as a counselor. Through this role, I learned the art of active listening, thoughtful questioning, and creating a safe space for others to share their stories. While my audience was often broader, the lessons in connecting with individuals on a personal level are directly transferable to counseling. I aim to bring the same level of attentiveness and care to my future clients, ensuring they feel understood and empowered to overcome their challenges.

What truly inspires me to pursue this path is the resilience I have seen in children. Despite facing adversity, many young people exhibit an incredible capacity for growth and change when provided with the right support. Whether it involves addressing issues like anxiety, family conflict, or academic pressures, I am committed to creating an environment where children feel safe and supported as they navigate their unique journeys.

Looking ahead, I plan to pursue graduate studies in counseling psychology to further refine my skills and deepen my understanding of the field. My ultimate goal is to work in a school or community-based setting, where I can provide accessible and impactful mental health support to young people. I am particularly interested in integrating mindfulness techniques and strength-based approaches into my practice, empowering children to recognize their inner resources and build resilience.

Any big plans?
As I prepare to graduate with a degree in psychology, I’m excited about the next phase of my journey. My immediate goals include expanding my role as a podcast host and personality, growing both Unfiltered Podcast and Jag-talk into platforms that foster meaningful conversations around mental health, wellness, and social advocacy. I also plan to partner with other platforms to reach wider audiences and continue creating impactful content. In the years to come, I hope to continue building on this foundation by pursuing a career in child development and family support. My goal is to create meaningful programs and services that uplift children and strengthen families, particularly in underserved communities like my own. I am grateful for the experiences and lessons I gained as a recreational assistant, and I look forward to carrying them with me as I work to make a lasting impact in the lives of others.

In addition, I’m considering pursuing graduate studies in psychology, with a potential focus on neuropsychology or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I aim to blend my academic knowledge with my media presence to raise awareness about mental health in diverse communities. Long term, I hope to leverage my leadership experience to step into mentorship and teaching roles, helping others navigate their own paths while continuing to explore new opportunities in psychology, media, and advocacy.
