Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Carter.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started doing makeup two years ago, I never thought it would become my passion and something that I love to do. I started off doing my own makeup a little in high school, I was insecure about the way I looked and my acne, so in 2019 I did a friend’s makeup for her prom and I posted it, and ever since then I just blew up from there. I started taking clients. I had a good amount every weekend and from there, people never stopped booking. I still have some of the same clients from day one and I’m always welcoming in new clients til this day. I cannot believe how much my clientele has grown. I love making people feel good on the inside and out whether they feel confident with makeup or without. During my makeup journey, I started my lash business. I started selling lashes. It came naturally to me just because doing makeup made it easier to sell them. I would watch so many YouTube videos and I came across one specific video that made me want to start right away. A year later, I wanted to do more than just makeup and lashes, so I started to get into skincare. I researched some Esthetician schools in my city, I went on tours, and ended up going to Baldwin Beauty School in December 2020 and graduated June 2021. Now I am working on taking my state board to get my license, and soon will have my own cosmetic/skincare line. I want to be the biggest MUA/Esthetician/Business Owner in my city.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely was not the smoothest road. When the pandemic hit, I really couldn’t take any clients. So it just made me question a lot. I felt lost and stuck but I know I wasn’t the only one and I knew things would get better and soon everything will be as close as back to normal as possible. Also, there were times I just questioned if this was the right path for me, sometimes I just wanted to give up but I knew that it was God testing me to see how strong I am and how badly I wanted this. So I just always remind myself that this is what I want and if I give up, I’m not only letting my family down but I’m letting myself down. I know I make a lot of people proud in my life, including myself so I just want to keep that up. I’m human, I go through personal things in my personal life but I try to not let it leak into my work life and affect my clients. Sometimes I get discouraged and unmotivated but I just remind myself, “You won’t always be motivated, so be disciplined.”
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an MUA, a business owner, and soon to be a Licensed Esthetician. I’m known as a boss in my city. Everybody knows me as Lala the MUA. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, I never thought it would’ve gotten this far. I’ve expanded my brand so much, I inspire so many people in my city and I hope to make a positive impact on every person I meet. What sets me apart from others is that I don’t limit myself to one thing. I’m always willing to learn more and try new things, I like to do whatever makes me happy.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising a lot of people don’t know about me is that I’m extremely goofy and bubbly. I love to laugh and have fun and I’m very outgoing.
