Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Orleans.
Hi Joy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, the birthplace of Jazz. I began performing for family and friends at a very young age, I have always loved to sing for others. My father, recognizing my passion, formed a gospel quartet with my siblings and I. Later, after the quartet, I began performing as a featured artist with New Orleans legends Dr. John and Walter Wolfman Washington. After singing at many popular New Orleans venues and festivals such as the New Orleans Jazz Festival and French Quarter Festival and touring the U.S. and Europe, I decided to build my own band. Shortly after, I became a regular headliner at B.B. Kings blues club. After having performed in groups and with bands I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my solo career.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been the smoothest road, but nothing important ever is. I’ve experienced a lot of adversity, but I have fallen in love with the journey. Everything from cancelations to broken promises to unreliable colleagues have occurred on the road I’ve traveled. Things will not always be easy but that’s how I know it’s worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a performing and recording artist from New Orleans, Louisiana. I am a soul singer with a bit of Jazz, blues and R&B mixed in! I am known for having a soulful voice and for bringing Joy wherever I go. I’m very proud of my community advocacy work as well as my work with youth creatives. I think what sets me apart from others is my goals. My goal is for everyone who hears my music to experience joy. More than a song going platinum or a 100,000 streams I want my music to touch the heart of each person that listens in a unique and personal way.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I loved being able to sing in my family band. We would travel all across the tri-state area singing in different churches and eating sandwiches in our tour van. I look fondly on these memories often.
