Check Out Jon Sosis’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Sosis.

Jon Sosis

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Upon graduation in 2008, I began working at Warner Music Group in New York. Also in 2008, I had been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and was sick to the point where I could barely leave the house. In 2014 after many failed attempts at treatment, I had decided to undergo three major surgeries to completely remove my large intestine which as it turns out, you can completely live without. ANYWAY, after surgery, I was sent home with painkillers and started immediately hallucinating on them. Not a great time. I decided I needed something to keep my mind off of the pain and decided to buy a LEGO set, a movie theater. I was hooked. For the next few years, I spent a lot of my free time clearing my brain by building LEGO, and in 2019, right before the pandemic, I decided it might be fun to shoot a web series where I interview friends while building LEGO and “Building Friendships” was born.

The pandemic really put me in what felt like a time loop, every day feeling super repetitive and monotonous. An opportunity popped up to help create and launch a production company at a comedy club in West Hollywood so I saw this as an opportunity to move to Los Angeles and start the next part of my journey. I took the job and spent the next 2.5 years getting it off the ground, giving myself no time for any personal projects, which I really missed.

In August 0f 2023, I decided to leave the comedy club, but more importantly, decided I wanted to shoot another season of “Building Friendships” with some amazing friends/guests that I’ve met during my time in LA so far like Sarah Tiana, Adam Ray, Marc Maron, Catherine Corcoran and more!

As for my next move, I really can’t wait to announce it VERY soon.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I honestly believe that if you have a smooth road with anything, you’re not trying hard enough.

My biggest struggle thus far was coming to terms with being sick ten years ago and accepting that something will just be 100% out of your control.

That being said, getting friends excited to build LEGO is not as easy as you might imagine. (Nobody imagines this.)

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a writer and producer who has really focused on being able to deliver projects on a budget. I created and produced a couple of scripted web series’ for Warner Music and was able to build an entire production network from scratch on a minimal budget in my previous roles.

I think a lot of producers prefer a highly padded budget so they don’t have to think twice about careless spending. I take pride in the fact that I can work with almost any reasonable budget, even if that includes me stepping into a role whether it’s running a camera or editing.

Right now, my focus has been promoting “Building Friendships” Season 2. It’s a rare time in my career where I have a few weeks free in between my jobs and can focus on a personal project that is super unique and fun and can introduce viewers to some of my favorite people.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I’m genuinely the most happy when I’m able to deliver for people. Whether it’s advising on a project or helping to create it, I love being a part of anyone’s creative process and seeing something progress from concept to final product.

There’s something about being a small piece of a large puzzle that is super satisfying. I mean, I’m promoting my LEGO series so is there a better analogy to use? Probably not.
