Today we’d like to introduce you to J’nana Lewis
Hi J’nana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was birthed into yoga back in late 2019. Darkness had consumed my life. The global pandemic had begun and I was laid off from my job. In the midst of this, I was battling abuse, anxiety, depression, and ptsd. Survival mode had taken its toll. I grew tired of living in pain, hopelessness, and despair. So, I chose to seek out purpose. Through research I discovered the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional advantages yoga had to offer. Shortly afterwards, I sought out yoga studio’s intuitively. Eager to heal, I booked my first yoga class at CorePower Yoga Studio. The experience was amazing. My yoga instructors genuine energy made me feel safe. Their community made me feel at home. I was so impressed at how moving my body allowed me to release stress, anxiety, and tension. Unfortunately my bliss came to an abrupt end when the world was ordered to quarantine. The isolation led to my lack of motivation to continue to practice. I felt that I had taken another loss so my demons reemerged.
I was reborn into yoga in 2020 after my car accident. My driver made an illegal u-turn into an intersection going 60mph. This decision changed my life forever. We were struck on the right side of the SUV by a Toyota going 90 mph. The collision tossed the SUV across the street. I suffered a severe concussion, muscle spasms, cervical and lumbar herniated disc injuries. I was completely bed bound the first 3 months after the accident. I lost control over the right side of my body, both my speech and vision were impaired, and my mobility was limited. Not to mention the mental and emotional trauma I endured as well. This impact brought me back to feeling anxious, depressed, and hopeless. I was in physical therapy for two years. Eventually, I needed knee injections to rebuild the muscle I had lost. Once I completed my treatment, I was determined to reclaim my life. I searched for ways to improve my well being again. From there my relationship with yoga strengthened. I was familiar with the benefits of yoga and how much it assisted me with my mind to body connection previously so, I dove back into my yoga routine. However, I couldn’t afford to turn to a yoga studio like I once had. Plus, I still had limitations on my mobility. Therefore I relied on YouTube. I searched for a teacher who could inspire me to become more disciplined in yoga. Soon after, I found a yoga teacher who resonated with my hunt. That teacher was BlackYogi Nico Marie. Through her teaching I was made aware of how to enhance my mind and body connection with unique flows, affirmations, and meditation techniques. I noticed how fast I was able to facilitate healing in my own body. My mind was blown at how quickly I strengthened my body, rebuilt muscle, improved my balance, corrected my posture and improved my mental health. Yoga became apart of my spirituality.
Yet, it wasn’t until 2023 that I had the opportunity to pursue yoga diligently. I enrolled into Corepower Yoga 200HR TT upon being awarded a BIPOC scholarship. From there my voyage began to expand. In those 9 weeks yoga became my way of life. My curiosity manifested into so much more. I was able to deepen my knowledge of yoga from the inside out. I was introduced to Yamas, Niyamas, Chakras Sequencing, Flows, Theming, Anatomy and so much more! I even had the opportunity to observe the evolution of my yoga practice and feel those effects in my 7 month pregnant body during my Teacher Training. Although I had to customize my yoga exercise to serve my pregnancy, CorePower’s community had given me an abundance of energy to actively pursue yoga through their constant support of my success.
I finally graduated from my 200HR CorePowerYoga Teacher Training in March of 2024. I was now 4 months postpartum; accordingly, I resumed yoga with patience. It was necessary to transform my movement in order to serve my postnatal body. Plus, Motherhood was my new life style and I was curious to see how yoga would work into it. This led to a new approach to yoga. I went back to YouTube and discovered two more Yoga teachers that helped me develop my routine with a new resonance. These teachers were Jessica Pumple Pregnancy and PostpartumTV and Brown Girl Yogi. They inspired me to teach yoga in a way that is inclusive of families. I intentionally studied postnatal, mommy and me, and children’s yoga in my own body day to night. I loved how I received the same benefits of yoga in addition to bonding with my baby. This new realm of yoga left a lasting impact on me. Moving forward, I knew that I wanted to create a foundation for families.
In the Summer of 2024, I embarked on the opportunity to become a Group Facilitator for Moms at Kindred Space LA. This gave me the chance to offer support and Mommy & Me yoga. My joyful experience encouraged me to go even further. I later became a volunteer at Heal One World nonprofit where I gift yoga for Families in a non competitive environment. Teaching yoga for families brings joy and fulfillment into my life.
My mission is to magnify family yoga. My goal is to blossom avenues in yoga that cultivate playful, safe, and inclusive environments where families thrive, bond, and build community in addition to the health benefits that yoga provides. I continue to work hard to develop my skills by increasing my knowledge in all aspects of yoga, as well as evolve yoga in way that truly serves my students.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My path has been turbulent. Along the way I’ve faced many ups and downs. Currently, I find it challenging to maintain balance between being a new mother and a career woman. Creating a foundation for my career and family simultaneously isn’t easy but, I believe it’s definitely attainable. As I grow through this journey I am learning to accept where I am now and see this obstacle as motivation to achieve more. I do my best to extend myself grace to make way for the patience that is required to pursue my dreams.
