Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Poe.
Hi Jeff, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My professional photography journey started in 2017. That’s the year I had my first juried art show in a gallery in El Segundo. Later that year I had my first solo art show and front-page feature in the local newspaper. The feature was highlighting my show at a local surf shop where I released my “Towers of the Southbay” series. It’s a new take on the lifeguard towers of the Southbay and I photographed all of them from Redondo Beach to Santa Monica from a unique perspective. Before 2017 I was traveling, taking photos, printing them, and hanging them on my own personal walls. People would always tell me to sell them to the public, but before 2017 I never did.
After that, I sold my art in numerous art shows and galleries around Southbay and Los Angeles. I’ve always specialized in printing and selling fine art photography and since those early days, I have had my work sold in galleries in Sun Valley, Idaho, and Greater Zion, Utah. I’ve been lucky enough to have my work purchased by collectors all over the United States and in 4 different countries.
I continue to sell fine art prints and do commercial photography with clients all over the country. I really enjoy creating colorful and peaceful pieces of art that will brighten my clients’ walls and make them smile every time they walk past them.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Running a small business has definitely been challenging during these tough years. As a one-man show, it doesn’t get any smaller. I burned myself out a bit from 2018- late 2019 by doing so many art shows and was looking forward to getting back into that circuit come 2020. Plans for that changed a bit with the pandemic and I shifted my focus more to online sales.
Online art sales have definitely increased, and that trend should continue. I upgraded my online selling tools and learned a lot more about digital marketing during this time period. The photography market continues to get more saturated and watered down as camera cell phones become better and better. However, most people do not know how or where to print stunning photography and there will always be a market for that.
Photos deserve to be printed and hung on your walls!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in printing large fine art photographs perfect for any home decor style. I travel extensively and have images that work on almost any wall. I enjoy printing art in all types of mediums including paper, metal, canvas, and wood.
I have numerous unique series and collections I’ve launched, including a surfboard line. I recently released a really fun and unique series highlighting the beauty of America. It’s called “Shapes of America” and features an image from each state printed within the borders of the state outline. My goal with this series is to showcase our diverse country and find something beautiful in each state to feature.
I also enjoy printing large triptychs of panoramic photography that work well behind a couch or above a bed and in large spaces. When I shoot photographs, I’m always trying to find an image or composition that would look amazing on your walls.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was always the rambunctious middle child of 3 boys. In all of my childhood pictures, I’m smiling and usually causing mischief of some sort. I grew up in Maryland outside of Annapolis and love the water, crabbing, fishing, and anything outdoors.
I’ve always had a lot of energy and a thirst for travel and exploration. My first international overseas trip was to the Bahamas with my high school track team, and I studied and lived in Australia for a semester in college. I enjoy seeing different cultures and meeting people from all walks of life. Altogether I’ve been to over 20 countries and almost every state.
I have always been athletic and played sports most of my life. In high school, I played soccer, ran track, and played lacrosse. I’m also an Eagle Scout and spent most weekends growing up camping and hiking. I continue that trend today and you’ll rarely find me inside or stationary for long stretches of time.
