Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Lai.
Hi Jason, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2006, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Business Marketing and Communications from California State University, Fullerton. After several years immersed in business studies, I couldn’t ignore my deep-seated passion for interior design. This led me to enroll in an Interior Design program, where I obtained my certification.
With over two decades in the interior design industry, I’ve had the privilege of owning JL Interiors since 2010. Our LA-based firm specializes in residential interiors, mastering a spectrum of styles—from contemporary to traditional and everything in between. Our mission is to empower homeowners to design their dream homes—spaces that are not only beautiful but function seamlessly.
Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate on exciting product lines, including the Millennium tub with Hydro Systems and the Mural wallpaper collection with Area Environments—projects that allowed me to blend creativity with innovation and expand my design footprint beyond interiors.
I’ve had the honor of working with a range of high-profile clients, including celebrities such as Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra, and Tommy Chong. Each of these projects came with its own unique vision, energy, and creative challenge. Whether crafting a serene retreat to balance a whirlwind touring schedule, or designing spaces that reflect bold personalities and global lifestyles, I’ve learned how to translate even the most ambitious ideas into functional, elevated design.
Working with celebrities requires a high level of discretion, flexibility, and attention to detail—and I’ve found that it’s often less about the spotlight and more about creating sanctuaries that feel authentic and grounded. I approach these projects the same way I approach all my work: listening deeply, building trust, and delivering spaces that feel personal, purposeful, and timeless.
As we approach our 15-year anniversary in 2025, I’ve been reflecting on how far JL Interiors has come—from operating out of a small guest bedroom of my West Hollywood apartment to a thriving team working out of our dedicated Santa Monica studio. Reaching this milestone is not just a celebration of longevity but of resilience, growth, and the many incredible clients and collaborators who’ve been part of the journey.
My dedication and versatility have been recognized through features on television shows like Bravo’s “Best Room Wins!” (where I won for contemporary design), “Million Dollar Listing LA,” and NBC’s “Open House,” which showcased my personal home in Santa Monica. The newest television debut is on YouTube series “Destination Restoration” by KILZ where we made over a deserving family’s home. Our work has also been highlighted in respected publications such as the Los Angeles Times, Elle Decor, Pasadena Now, The Global Design Post, Locale LA, and the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
In addition, we’ve gained online recognition through platforms like Accent Decor, Redfin, Houzz, Tastemade, Martha Stewart, Dunn Edwards, Kilz and others further extending our reach and connecting with design enthusiasts everywhere.
Beyond design, I cherish traveling and immersing myself in different cultures and cuisines, often drawing inspiration from these experiences. I’m also a wine enthusiast and enjoy spending quality time with my husband, Justin, and our close circle of family and friends in Santa Barbara’s wine country. Most recently, Justin and I returned from a 10-day spiritual journey through Japan, where we road-tripped across the country soaking in the calm, casual, and organic essence of Japandi style. The serene landscapes, thoughtful architecture, and quiet elegance of Japanese design offered fresh inspiration that continues to influence my work today.
Success, to me, is measured by the happiness of our clients and the well-being of our team. It’s about the meaningful connections we forge and the joy our designs bring to people’s lives. Ultimately, success is a feeling—a sense of fulfillment that transcends monetary value.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting JL Interiors in 2010, shortly after the Great Recession, presented its set of challenges—from financial constraints to building a client base. However, with resilience, networking, and hard work, we not only survived but thrived. What once began with just one team member has grown into a diverse family of five, now based in our renovated Santa Monica office.
A major turning point came in 2021 when I made the tough decision to part ways with my business partner. That experience taught me one of the hardest (and most valuable) lessons of my career: if you don’t absolutely need a business partner—don’t! Trust your vision, your instincts, and build thoughtfully. Since then, I’ve been able to lead JL Interiors with clarity, purpose, and a renewed sense of direction. The result? A harmonious work environment, strategic growth, and an energized team that continues to attract new collaborations and loyal clients.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a residential interior designer, I pride myself on listening intently to clients, understanding their needs, and translating their visions into reality. Our firm handles everything—from renovations and furniture selection to building homes from the ground up. We’re known for our efficient space planning and diverse design aesthetics, ensuring no square footage goes to waste. After all, money can’t buy you taste– good design comes from understanding people and their lives.
What truly sets us apart is our adaptability and commitment to clients across various budgets. Whether working with celebrities or those on a more modest budget, we believe everyone deserves a home that brings them joy. Our approach is rooted in honesty, functionality, and a personal connection that often evolves into lasting friendships.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
And while hard work and vision have driven so much of this journey, I’d be remiss not to acknowledge the role of luck—the kind that comes in the form of unwavering support from my friends, family, loyal clients, amazing contractors, and the many incredible vendors who’ve stood by me over the years. JL Interiors wouldn’t be what it is today without this circle of encouragement, trust, and collaboration. For that, I’m endlessly grateful.
