Check Out Jason Battle’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Battle

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My acting journey started during undergrad. I was actually majoring in economics and finance. Halfway through my junior year I realized I didn’t want a typical corporate America office job. However, I felt it was too late to change my major. I emailed all of the professors in the Theatre department explaining this to them. Only one of them emailed me back. I’ll forever be thankful for Lee Neibert, he told me to learn a monologue, come by his office and perform it for him. We worked on that monologue for a few weeks and eventually he invited me to audition for a play the university was putting up. Toni Morrisions’ ‘The Bluest Eye” was the first play I ever read, audition for, and performed. That was almost a decade ago, Ive been in love with acting ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ofcourse not! It’s always challenging starting something new, but it builds a lot of character. I ended up using that degree in economics and finance BRIEFLY. It was challenging leaving the stability and consistent paycheck. Then I went through what most new actors go through when trying to get into this industry; The fake agencies, acting coaches, modeling agencies exploiting you for money and promising you they’ll get you on tv etc. You eventually find your community and build from there. I found my way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I like to say Im an artist. It’s all encompassing of being an Actor, Singer, Songwriter, Model, etc. Im Art. I love the art of storytelling in any compacity. My primary focus is Acting. Theatre was my introduction to the world of being an Artist.

What am I most proud of?
hmm I think overall, Im just proud of myself for taking the leap of faith into this unstable, uncertain, career path. Even with all of its ups and downs, It’s made me feel fulfilled. I feel as though Im contributing something to the world through my art. Thats what Im most proud of.

What sets me apart is me, just being ME. I know thats a cliche answer but I think it’s that simple. In acting class you learn you have to know your essence, you have to know what makes you, YOU. For these auditions, everybody is gonna get the same lines to learn so the only thing that can make you stand out is you being authentically yourself.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Im extremely introverted. I think thats surprising to a lot of people given the career i’m in. The assumption seems to be that theatre kids, actors, artist etc all love attention and the spotlight. I am quite the opposite.
