Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn Monroe.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been singing since I was a young girl since about the age of 7. Over the years, I made my way through school and church choirs, street performances, theater productions to eventually learning guitar and piano to start my journey as an singer-songwriter/artist at 12 years old. There are so many aspects of my life both spirituality but also the music I grew up listening to that influenced me. Fast forward to 2011 after juggling a lifetime of music as a side hustle and working in corporate America. I decided to resign from my job as a bank manager and make a move to Nashville, TN to truly start my music career. I spent an exhilarating decade there planting roots, making music, meeting the most interesting people/friends and building a new chapter of my life. That all came to an unexpected halt in 2020. Not just because Covid hit us all but because my father became ill and I stepped in as his primary caregiver. He still lived in my hometown of Phoenix. In 2021, I ended up selling the home I had worked so hard to buy in Nashville and left my life there behind not knowing what the future was going to look like exactly. Giving up my life and dreams in Nashville was not easy but I knew taking care of my dad was an important part of my journey. The last six years of being a caregiver has taught me so much. It took me a while to get through some significant health issues with my dad but I eventually was able to put myself back out there to start singing and playing music again. Today, I have an incredible group of musicians and friends who make up “The Jaclyn Monroe Band”. We are in the midst of writing and rehearsing to make a new album. Some of the songs I’m working on for the album, I will be testing out on a live stage at a music festival I’ll be performing at in England this summer.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As I stated in my opening, it has been full of many challenges. From the aspect of just being a female in what has been a male dominated industry/town, evolving in age and then unexpectedly taking on the care of my aging father with health issues as his primary caregiver. I left Nashville after almost a decade to come care for my family and put my career on the back burner for a time. However, I am re-emerging with a new band, a new sound and new music all with burning embers from the fire of what I’ve walked through over the last six years.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a singer and a musical artist. I write, compose and sing original music in addition to performing music in multiple styles and genres for other projects. I would say that people are drawn the soulful nature of the music and is best enjoyed in a live setting. My unique life experiences, musical influences and personal style set me apart as a singer and musical artist. I don’t curate my style to any fad of the industry.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
From a young age, I was characterized by a strong drive and ambition. I distinctly remember having a vibrant, creative spirit coupled with an innate entrepreneurial mindset that manifested in a range of activities. These included everything from crafting and selling my own artwork door-to-door, to writing and choreographing captivating stage performances for various church and school talent shows. Beyond the arts, I also organized a babysitting club with my friends, and even transformed my bedroom into a makeshift salon, where I eagerly offered services such as haircuts, manicures, and relaxing massages to my family. Reflecting on those formative years, it’s clear that I’ve always been driven to create and contribute to the world around me through acts of service.
