Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel Rojas ‘Lopez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a proud Latina born and raised in the Bronx. I have three siblings, two on earth and one in heaven. I come from a hard-working immigrant family. My parents migrated from the Dominican Republic back in the ’60s. Strong work ethics were instilled in me from a very young age. I held my first job bagging groceries at our local supermarket at 12 years old. Today I am the proud owner of Healing Looks Great on You LLC. The mission and vision are to spread awareness around the importance of mental wellness and self-care.
My candle-making journey began in 2021. After tragically losing my younger brother Jonathan Rojas to suicide, I made it my mission to spread awareness about self-care and mental health. My best title has been being a mom to my sixteen-year-old daughter Arianna. I currently reside in Orange County with my husband and daughter. I consider myself a workprenuer because I work full time and own a business. The loss of my younger brother has fueled my passion for candle-making. I believe that there is a stigma surrounding mental health, and it prevents people from fully opening up about their struggles for fear of being ridiculed. The goal of my products is to allow people to accept their challenges and have an open dialogue, so they know they are not alone. The way I have achieved this is by curating workshops that create an atmosphere of relaxation and open communication. Through the art of candle making, I facilitate self-care workshops where the topics are typically about mental wellness and tips on balancing everyday life and its stressors. I hope folks attending my events walk away with a sense of acceptance and hope.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am no stranger to adversity and challenges. In my business, I learned a valuable lesson early on that prompted me to be cautious and overprotective with my business. Some challenges that I have faced on this journey have been the rise in the cost of the materials I rely on to sustain my business. Inflation has forced me to pivot in ways that I did not anticipate pivoting. However, I have kept my faith strong, and my purpose keeps me pushing past the challenges and obstacles I encounter as a minority woman and a small business owner.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently hold a Master’s in Public Administration, I have a background in law enforcement, and I currently work as the Associate Director for The National Network for Safe Communities, which is a research team out of John Jay College. Our work is centered nationally around Police reconciliation and Group violence. As the owner and founder of Healing Looks Great on You LLC. We specialize in natural soy candles made with organic fragrance oils hand-poured in small batches in my in-home candle studio. All of my products come with a special message, and that is “Healing Looks Great on You.”
We all bring our uniqueness to any business or career we embark on as individuals. My personal touch comes from within my ability to be an empath, and my drive from my own experiences sets me apart in my business.
What does success mean to you?
My definition of success is, one, the impact you have on the people you serve, and two, being better than you were yesterday. The competition is with the person you see when you are facing the mirror.
