Check Out Heather Chelan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Chelan.

Heather Chelan

Hi Heather, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a very musical family. It felt like the obvious path for me. For years I studied music and wrote songs, but something just wasn’t clicking. I knew that whatever I was doing was not what was most aligned with myself. Then, on the first day of lockdown in 2020, I began creating music in a new way. Instead of the pressure of a full-length 3 1/2 minute song with multiple verses, a chorus, and deep lyrics, I gave myself the freedom to write about anything I wanted and to make it as long as I want. This opened up a whole new world for me. Through this, I discovered my love of directing and editing videos and collaborating with like-minded artists. I’ve now been fully supporting myself as a content creator for almost four years.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
At first, the money I earned was supplemental, which made my videos very low stakes. When I split up with my partner in 2021, it was the first time I needed to rely on my art fully to pay the bills. This became especially hard when my creativity naturally ebbed and flowed. I’ve been confused many times about what my next moves should be, how to evolve and grow, and if I really was on the right path. It’s an amazing privilege to be able to support myself on something creative and fun, but it also comes with its challenges. When all I can think about is how I’m going to make rent next month, it’s very hard to dedicate 6 hours to writing a song and filming a video about how I need a full hour in the shower to shave my entire body, but persist, we must! I know this is aligned with my soul, and the right path will continue to reveal itself if I choose to listen.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve landed on the term “musical comedian” for myself. I write short (usually 30-60 seconds) songs about everyday life occurrences, awkward encounters, and random opinions. This has been the medium that has allowed me to create 100% authentically, opening doors for myself to explore myself in other ways. I gained my musical skills through years of pursuing music, and then when I pivoted to comedy, I had all of these amazing tools in my pocket to approach it in this unique and fun way, incorporating my musicianship and songwriting abilities. It’s so incredibly fun!

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Lockdown is actually what prompted me to start creating in this new way. I had this medium in the back of my mind for about a year and had done maybe 2 songs, but the literal first day of lockdown was when I took the full plunge. It taught me how to listen to myself and create 100% authentically. I created only when I wanted to create and said exactly what I wanted to say. I didn’t question myself or consider how it may land with other people. As I’ve gained notoriety, I’ve had to battle these things within myself, but my goal is always to stay true to myself and create whatever feels good to me. But lockdown really did teach me how to follow my spirit. If I wanted to create and post videos three days in a row, that’s what I did. If I wanted to play Zelda for 14 hours, that’s what I did. If I wanted to read an entire book or bake a cake, that’s what I did. I’ve learned that you can’t really ever fail in the grand scheme of things if you’re always trusting and following your intuition. Of course, there will be little “failures” along the way, but if you are ultimately doing what feels good and true to you, no one can knock for it.
