Check Out Haena An’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haena An.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a jewelry designer and silversmith based in Los Angeles. My journey in art and design began during college in Korea. As a teenager, I was always drawn to creativity and visual storytelling. I loved Vogue magazine far more than any textbook.

I began my career at Burberry as a PR intern while still in college, an experience that opened the door to working in public relations and marketing for luxury fashion and beauty houses, including Guerlain, Akris, Agnona and Ermenegildo Zegna. These roles taught me the power of brand identity, craftsmanship, and the emotional connection that luxury design can evoke.

In my late twenties, I relocated to Los Angeles and pursued fashion design studies at FIDM. After graduation, I worked as a fashion designer in downtown LA for years. While it was an enriching experience, I realized that corporate life didn’t allow me to fully express my creative vision, particularly when it came to aesthetics and design philosophy.

Throughout my time in luxury fashion, I remained deeply fascinated by the meticulous craftsmanship of artisans, the hands-on process and the artistry behind every detail. That fascination ultimately led me to jewelry design, where I could merge my love for design, storytelling, and fine craftsmanship into a singular creative pursuit.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many people who pursue their passion, it hasn’t been a smooth road. After leaving my first job in Los Angeles, I designed my first handbag and gathered a small team to build a brand together. It was an uncertain time financially, emotionally, and creatively. Transitioning from fashion PR to design, and later from fashion to jewelry, meant starting over more than once. Each change required me to rebuild my skills, confidence, and professional network from the ground up.

Looking back, those struggles and diverse experiences became the foundation of my independence and authenticity as an artist. Every challenge helped me better understand what kind of designer I truly wanted to be.

When I moved to Los Angeles, I had to adjust not only to a new culture but also to a completely different creative environment. Working in fashion design taught me a great deal, but I often struggled to balance my artistic vision within the limitations of corporate direction. It took courage to step away from stability and start again as a jewelry designer — creating each piece by hand and discovering my own voice through metal and gemstones.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a jewelry designer and silversmith based in Los Angeles. I design and handcraft fine jewelry that blends modern sensibility with timeless craftsmanship. My work often explores the harmony between structure and fluidity inspired by architecture, nature, and the emotional connection between the wearer and the piece.

Each piece is made from scratch in my studio, using traditional metalsmithing techniques combined with fine gemstones, 18k gold and silver. I value the slow, intentional process of making from sawing and soldering to setting each stone by hand. That attention to detail and respect for craft are at the heart of my practice. I want my jewelry to feel personal, not mass-produced something that evolves with the wearer over time.

What sets my work apart is the balance between artistic vision and craftsmanship. My background in luxury fashion and design gave me an eye for proportion and elegance, while my hands-on training as a silversmith grounds my work in authenticity and technique. I see jewelry not just as adornment, but as a small piece of art that lives with you, something that feels both modern and enduring.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I’m still walking my own path, feeling grateful for the process of creating each piece by hand. I try to stay intentionally mindful in every aspect of my life — emotionally, physically, and creatively. I often ask myself what I truly want to pursue and what kind of quality of life I want to embody.
The answer always comes back to gratitude and mindfulness. These values guide not only how I live but also how I create. I hope that the people who wear my jewelry can feel that same sense of calm, presence, and appreciation for craftsmanship — a gentle reminder to slow down and find beauty in each moment.
