Today, we’d like to introduce you to Grace Ojewole.
Hi Grace, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Grace Ojewole, but my artist’s name is Titilayo. I grew up in the Bay Area in Northern California and attended Howard University for my undergraduate degree. I moved to Los Angeles afterward to pursue my Master’s degree and also pursue my dreams.
While attending Howard University, I got inspired by being in a new environment, and I was also actively involved in the arts on campus. I started writing poetry as an escape, but it eventually turned into a hobby. When I moved to Los Angeles, music just always seemed to find me, even at the lowest points in my life. It was like a form of therapy. I was finally inspired to write my first rap one day, and the rest was history.
Once I started writing and recording my own music, I knew that music was my calling. The feeling that I get when I’m recording and I know that I wrote every lyric is so dope and makes me not want to give up. Music takes me to a place where I feel like I can conquer anything. It’s a part of me, and I can’t see myself doing anything else for the rest of my life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Pursuing anything can be difficult, especially when you want to give it your all and make it your full-time commitment.
I experienced a lot of things that could’ve made me want to quit and give up my dreams, but something at the back of my mind always told me not to. And that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
All of the experiences that I went through definitely made me stronger and also inspired me to be very successful with my dreams and my career. All the greats that I look up to have stories of struggling to reach the heights of success that they achieved.
And their determination always inspired me to keep going even when I don’t get the results that I want right away. Every minor setback leads to a major comeback. Success doesn’t happen overnight.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an Afrobeat/hip-hop rapper as well as a songwriter. I’m most known for writing my own music and making unique music. I’m most proud of my bachelor’s degree from Howard University. Attending that University really helped to shape me into the successful woman that I am today.
The culture definitely motivated me to always aim for the highest achievement in my life and to never take “no” for an answer. Many successful people attended my university, like Mrs. Kamala Harris, our first female African American Vice President, Chadwick Boseman, and many more. I had the honor of having Chadwick Boseman as my commencement speaker, and his speech motivated me to want to move to Los Angeles after graduation.
His speech reminded me that the sky is the limit when it comes to your dreams and that if you have a dream, you have the ability to make it come true. I think what makes me unique as an artist is that I write all of my music. When I’m in the studio recording my music, I can take myself back to the place where I was when I wrote those lyrics. I love being able to write my own lyrics and articulate my words in the form of a song. It’s so dope.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was extremely shy but always had the urge to perform. I grew up in a church, and both of my parents were preachers. I watched my parents be leaders, and that always motivated me to want to be a successful leader. Watching them not give up on their dreams of having a church always inspired me to never give up on my dreams.
I found my love for music while being in the choir at church. The rappers that inspired me the most throughout my musical journey are Jay-Z, Biggie, Tupac, Nas, Lil Wayne, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Eminem, 50 Cent, Lauryn Hill, Foxy Brown, Nicki Minaj, Lil Kim, Kanye West, E-40, Too Short, Mac Dre, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, and many more.
Their stories, achievements, and determination are so inspiring and always motivated me to be successful in my career and never give up on my dreams.
