Today we’d like to introduce you to Galina Pozdniakova.
Hi Galina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hey, I’m Gali! I’m a hand poke tattoo artist bringing vintage vibes and a fresh twist to historical tattoo designs. I work at Outer Limits, the oldest operating tattoo shop in the U.S., which is also home to a tattoo museum. It’s an incredible space where history and artistry come together, and I’m proud to contribute to its legacy every day. My style is all about classic flash with a bold edge, and I’m here to give people art that sticks with them and makes them feel the most confident person in the room. Whether it’s a quick flash or a bigger project, I’m all about that cool, meaningful connection with my clients. Tattoos are my way of blending old-school with my own touch, that’s a little edgy, a little scandalous, and 100% authentic.
I do a lot of classic tattoo subjects—snakes, skulls, daggers, pinups—the kind of designs your great-grandfather might have gotten in the Navy. Sometimes, clients come to me wanting specific vintage flash from old tattoo books or even recreations of tattoos their ancestors had. It’s a beautiful way to create a meaningful connection between generations through timeless art.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey to becoming a tattoo artist wasn’t a straight path—it was a story shaped by resilience, rebellion, and a search for freedom. Growing up in Russia, I faced political repression head-on, joining protests for fair and democratic elections, for freedom of political prisoners and fighting for voices that were silenced. That was a big inspiration for my art and stay by now. Standing up came with consequences, and eventually, it pushed me to leave and find a safer space to continue my journey.
For a year and a half, after I left my home I was on the constant move, traveling through Europe, Central Asia, and Latin America. Each place gave me new experiences and perspectives that have shaped my art and myself.
Eventually, I made my way to the U.S., where I’m now building a life that gives me the freedom to create, to grow as an artist, and to continue standing up for what I believe in. I’m proud to work at Outer Limits, the oldest operating tattoo shop in the United States, located in Long Beach, California since 1927. This iconic space is more than just a tattoo studio—it’s home to a tattoo museum that preserves the rich history of the craft, showcasing artifacts, tools, and stories from decades past. Being part of such a historic shop allows me to honor the roots of tattooing while contributing to its ongoing legacy through my own work.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a hand poke tattoo artist with a passion for vintage style and a love for creating pieces that feel timeless and a little rebellious. I mostly do flash designs with classic aesthetics, though I’m always looking to take on bigger projects that tell a deeper story.
I’m most proud of the connections I make with my clients. Coming from a background of resilience and protest, I bring a unique energy to my tattoos—a mix of grit and beauty that feels real. I think what sets me apart is that I’m not just creating tattoos; I’m building moments. My journey across different countries and cultures has shaped my art, giving it a sense of freedom and individuality that people resonate with.
I want my tattoos to feel like they have a story to tell, like they’re more than just ink on skin. That’s what keeps me passionate—creating pieces that last, that people carry with them as a reminder of their own journey and strength. My clients often choose bold, classic designs that are easy to recognize and appreciate, even from a distance. These tattoos not only stand out but also spark connection, as they often receive positive comments and admiration from others. It’s rewarding to know the art they wear continues to inspire and resonate wherever they go.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people who know me as a tattoo artist might be surprised to learn about my background as a political activist. From 2019 to 2022, while building my career in tattooing, I was also deeply involved in protests in Russia, standing up against repression and fighting for democracy. I draw a lot of inspiration from Russian criminal tattoo traditions, which have always been very political and carry a powerful message of resistance. These tattoos highlight the reality that those in power, like Vladimir Putin—who’s been internationally wanted since 2022—are the true criminals, dictating how others should live, while real heroes like Alexey Navalny, Ilia Yashin, and Vladimir Kara-Murza are imprisoned for exposing government corruption and speaking out for freedom. I don’t often tattoo political flash, as it’s a highly specific topic, but this activism deeply influences my art. It motivates me to keep these conversations alive, especially with clients who may not hold strong political views, encouraging them to recognize the power they have to shape the future.
As a tattoo artist, I’m passionate about blending timeless traditions with bold, creative expression. My work is inspired by vintage naive styles and classic designs that carry a sense of history and personal meaning. Whether I’m recreating ancestral tattoos, working with classic flash, or exploring deeply personal designs, my goal is to create art that connects, empowers, and tells a story. For me, tattooing is more than a craft—it’s a way to preserve legacies, spark conversations, and celebrate individuality.
