Today we’d like to introduce you to Eugene Kay.
Hi Eugene, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I didn’t start in a comfortable place.
I moved to the U.S. at 21 from Ukraine — a country going through war. It wasn’t just a relocation, it was starting over under pressure, leaving behind everything familiar and stepping into complete uncertainty.
At the beginning, I took whatever work I could just to stay afloat. I worked as a busboy in a restaurant cleaning tables, running food, and cleaning restrooms when needed. Long hours, physical work, and a constant reminder that I was far from the life I wanted.
But that period shaped me.
It taught me discipline, resilience, and something even more important that I didn’t come this far just to stay in survival mode.
I knew I had to build something of my own.
That’s when I found permanent makeup.
At first, it was just an opportunity, but very quickly I realized it was something deeper. I saw how much confidence it gives people now the right brows or lips can completely change the way someone feels about themselves.
So I committed.
I invested in my skills, practiced obsessively, worked with real clients, and kept improving. No shortcuts just consistency and focus.
Today, I’m building my career as a permanent makeup artist, creating natural, refined results and growing a personal brand that reflects quality and precision.
I’m still in the process. Still building. Still pushing forward.
But I’m no longer in survival mode.
Now I’m building a life on my own terms.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.
One of the biggest challenges was starting over in a new country while everything back home in Ukraine was unstable because of the war. There was constant emotional pressure — worrying about family, adapting to a completely new environment, and trying to build a future at the same time.
When I arrived in Los Angeles, I didn’t speak English, and I didn’t know anyone. It was just me and this huge city. No support system, no connections — just the need to figure everything out on my own.
At the beginning, I had to take survival jobs. I worked as a busboy, doing physically demanding work, long hours, cleaning tables, running food, and even cleaning restrooms. It was mentally tough, especially knowing I was capable of more but not yet there.
Another challenge was building something from zero.
No clients, no network, no guaranteed income — just uncertainty. There were moments of doubt, especially when investing in myself and not seeing immediate results. Building trust, skills, and a reputation takes time, and that process isn’t always easy.
But those challenges forced me to grow fast.
I became more disciplined, more resilient, and more focused. I learned how to move forward even when things feel uncertain, and how to stay committed to a bigger vision.
Looking back, it wasn’t easy at all
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a permanent makeup artist based in Los Angeles, specializing in natural, refined results that enhance a person’s features rather than change them.
My focus is on brows and lips — soft, balanced, and long-lasting work that looks clean both immediately and after healing. I work with high-quality pigments and precise techniques to ensure the color stays stable over time without unwanted tones.
What I do is not just a procedure — it’s a transformation in how someone feels about themselves. I pay close attention to detail, symmetry, and customization, so every result is tailored to the individual face, not a template.
I’ve invested tens of thousands of dollars into my education and training to refine my technique and stay at a high level. For me, this isn’t just a job — it’s a craft I take seriously, and I’m constantly improving.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. Many of them come in not just for a service, but for confidence — and seeing that shift is the most valuable part of my work.
What sets me apart is my approach.
I combine technical precision with a strong aesthetic eye and a very personal level of care. I don’t rush the process, and I treat every client as an individual, not a number. Every procedure is done with intention and focus.
I’m also building more than just a service — I’m building a personal brand based on quality, consistency, and a clean, modern aesthetic.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is progress.
Coming from a completely different country, starting from zero, not speaking the language, and building my life step by step — seeing that growth is what gives me the most satisfaction.
I find happiness in creating something of my own.
Through my work as a permanent makeup artist, I’m not just providing a service — I’m building a skill, a reputation, and a brand. I enjoy the process of improving, refining my technique, and pushing myself to a higher level.
Another thing that makes me happy is the impact I have on people.
Seeing a client look in the mirror and feel more confident, more put together — that moment is real. It reminds me why I chose this path.
At the same time, I value independence.
Being able to shape my own future, make my own decisions, and not stay limited by where I started — that freedom is important to me.
For me, happiness is not a static feeling. It comes from growth, discipline, and building a life that feels like mine.
