Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Blake-thomas
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Having just directed my latest feature film in 6 days in California with a 35 person crew and an amazing 3 lead cast, I am feeling elated, rejuvenated, happy and proud. leading up to this project, life was busy. After the “event” I like to take a moment to recognize the achievement. Every time I complete a film, or have a book published, or make a keynote speech I try to remember how I got to this moment. Our story makes us who we are, the layers of experience we encounter lead us to each chapter. I look back at how my story started and it’s as much through negative experiences (lessons) as it is through positive ones that have given me the opportunities to become who I am.
Going through a divorce, being a single mum, and leaving family and friends to move 6000 miles away from home. This all lead me to begin a new career and start a new life. Every part of my journey made me a stronger and more dedicated individual to achieving the life I want to create.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life is full of twists and turns. in my daughter’s words “life is a lot”. It’s how we look at our struggles and manage them that makes us who we are. Covid, strikes, tax increases and cost of living all contribute to the colorful life I have been living these past 5 years. One of the choices I made was how to utilize the struggle in a positive way.
I decided to sell everything and become a minimalist and full vegan (as opposed to a vegetarian) as well as a zero waster. Mid way through my life means I’ve become aware and highly conscious of my effect on the planet and others. I try to live a frugal and fulfilling life that can ensure I get to live out my creative dreams.
It’s about working out what our priorities are in life and utilizing the time we have to make the most of it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am filled with creativity. I can’t help but live everyday to my creative fullest. Whether I’m directing a movie, writing my next book, painting, creativity coaching or writing my articles, I don’t stop creating.
My super power is that I’m not a perfectionist and I have no creative fear. This means I don’t allow my concerns of inadequacy to over take my positive self belief.
If I had worries about what others thought or how good I was I would have stopped at page 1 of my book.
My greatest achievement however is being a mother. My daughter is mindful and kind and filled with an incredible spirit that she shares with whoever she comes across. I couldn’t be more proud of her.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I have an exercise that I’ve created called “Pocket of Happiness”. this is where we fill our metaphorical pocket with whatever makes us happy. I enjoy doing this exercise regularly because our happiness can change. I used to just love sunshine, but now I love weather, any weather. If I’m sitting inside drinking a hot cup of tea, wearing warm socks and pajamas and listening to the rain whilst reading a book, that can bring me as much pleasure as lying in the sunshine whilst listening to my favorite artist.
Waking up with my dog and seeing my daughter and saying I love you, feels like I’ve found treasure each morning.
Being in nature at every opportunity feeds my soul. My happiness comes from feeding my mind, body and soul. My current pocket of happiness is filled with: time, friends, dog, daughter, nature, books, paints and pens, music, fairylights and travel.
