Today we’d like to introduce you to Douglas Flores
Hi Douglas, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I believe it started when I was a teenager. I spent a lot of time on my own, watching the world from the sidelines. I’d notice the small things like people with groceries on the bus, the way someone would put out a cigarette, and the faces of strangers I’d see on quick trips to the market. I’d pick up on the little details of people’s expressions, the way they moved, their gestures, the light around them. The more time I spent on the streets, the more I felt drawn to those moments. I’m not sure why I started paying such close attention, but I think it was the time I spent alone. Those moments connected me to the world as if I were part of something bigger. So, I picked up a camera and started interacting with the world around me. Over time, I began to notice empty spaces not just people, but the stories they left behind, the subtle traces of their presence.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. For a long time, I didn’t pick up a camera. Life was full of challenges, and I was just trying to find my way. Even now, as I write this, the struggles continue. I went through a battle with cancer, which disconnected me from the world for a while. The scars it left have become a constant challenge in my everyday life. But I realized that photography was one of the few things that kept me feeling connected to life. It became my way to stay connected with the world, and that realization has kept me moving forward.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I wouldn’t say I specialize in anything specific, to be honest. My work is an extension of myself and how I see the world. I’m not focused on creating the most beautiful or grand images, what I photograph is everyday life. It’s the small moments, the details that often go unnoticed. What sets me apart is that I’m just being present, letting the way I see the world speak for itself. I’m most proud of how my work stays true to that sense of authenticity and connection. I think that’s what makes my work unique.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising that most people might not know about me is that I’m quite a kid at heart. A lot of people think I’m more serious than I am, but the truth is, while I may come across as introspective, I’m also playful in my approach to life and my work. All I’m doing is engaging with the world around me. I’m not in a traditional playground anymore, but I’m still driven by that curiosity and sense of wonder.
