Today we’d like to introduce you to Darienne Savoy.
Hi Darienne, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Waldorf, Maryland, which is a small town area about an hour from Baltimore! For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved creating art, specifically performance art. I would always write mini skits and put on shows in my basement with my dad, riding my bike around the neighborhood to pass out invitations. As I grew older, this turned into a deep love for music. Listening to artists like Michael Jackson and Alicia Keys gave me a feeling I could never quite put into words. Even though I may not have been able to relate to everything the music expressed at such a young age, it moved me to tears simply from the beauty and the heart behind it. This lead me to write my first original song when I was nine years old. Singing and songwriting quickly became my greatest passions, as well as Musical Theatre. Once I entered high school, I immediately joined the drama club and began performing in shows. By the time I was ready to apply to colleges, I genuinely could not see myself feeling fulfilled in any other field. I applied and was accepted into The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, moving my dream from Maryland to New York City, and then to Los Angeles where I finished school after the pandemic! I went through a significant journey in those four years, and while Musical Theatre will always hold a special place in my heart, I realized my heart was and always had been in creating original music once I moved to LA. And since graduation, that is exactly what my heart has been after! I released my first single in 2022, and then connected with Noriko Olling (one of my former college professors who is now my phenomenal producer) to release my second single as well as my debut project, which just released in September! It is called “Work Of Art: Exhibit A” and is part one of a two-part album that tells the most vulnerable pieces of my story. I am very proud of this project and feel that it embodies what has shaped me into the person I am today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I definitely am very blessed to be where I am now and on this journey as a whole, but I will say, the road has not been easy. I did unfortunately battle with being abused in my childhood and teenage years, which lead me to face anxiety and PTSD growing up/through my young adult life. While it was a very traumatizing and painful time in my life, it did strengthen me as a person. It taught me to lead my life now with as much love as possible, which I strive to do every day. It also taught me a lot about vulnerability. In the process of healing, I almost felt for a while that I needed to hide away because I was “too broken”. I wouldn’t let anyone get too close to me previously because of this. But I have had such a beautiful support system of family and friends that have embraced me with open arms, showing me that vulnerability is powerful and what shapes the most beautiful parts of me (and of all of us!). Music has become such an outlet for me and this vulnerability (I’ve written songs titled “Bleed”, “In Too Deep”, and “Good In The World” about these experiences and plan to share more about my healing in the second part of my project), and I am so grateful that something I once hid in shame from is now my greatest strength, and that I’ve developed artistry through it that lead me to where I am now!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Speaking in a general sense, I am a Pop/R&B/and Soul Vocalist, Songwriter, and Creative. Going deeper into that, my main aspiration and goal is to create timeless music and art that allows people to feel moved and connected to their depth and authenticity. I have a variety of music out on all platforms now, but I would say I am most known for my ballads. Ballads are where I am my most personal and from the heart, and I find that those who support me have found me so far in the same ways I found my favorite artists- from ballads that touched my heart. I am consistently striving to grow as an artist, and so I would say I am most proud of my current work, and the era of my life that is “Work Of Art”. I wanted to find a creative way to tie my story together and express it. While walking through a museum in Downtown LA with friends, I was reminiscing on how as artists, we take what may be seen as dark or heavy and turn it into something beautiful. That is when this album concept clicked for me, and the album is my story told chronologically with visual art intertwined in the music! Exhibit A (and the music to come in Exhibit B) are what best represent me as an artist and creative, and I am so proud that the first portion is out in the world.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t typically refer to it as luck, but instead, I would call it blessings! I consider myself to be very blessed and this has played such a huge role in my life and my art. I truly believe everything happens for a reason, and our paths lead us exactly where we are destined. I believe everything that has happened in my life, the good, bad, and ugly, all were needed elements to bring me here. Everything to come will be a needed element that leads me where I am going next. And I have learned to live in gratitude, knowing that my path ahead is blessed, no matter how smooth or rocky the road is to get there.
