Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Bright
Hi Chris, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I fell into screenwriting by accident. I was majoring in music at college, specifically percussion performance. I was minoring in film (just because I heard my school had a good film program, and if I could watch movies for class, that sounded fun). But halfway through my sophomore year I needed to get surgery on my hand. When I came back, I just couldn’t play in the same way. I was devastated and trying to figure out what to do with my life, and I just so happened to be taking a screenwriting class. I loved it and decided this is what I wanted to do. I ended up working at Disney Animation out of college and kept writing my own things on the side, till eventually my first script got picked up by a studio. I’ve been continuing to write ever since.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As you can tell, it certainly hasn’t been a smooth road. I quit Disney Animation to pursue writing full time, and for about a year-and-a-half I wasn’t making any money, was living with my parents, and was truly convinced I’d never make it. Also, the first three projects I got in Hollywood all ended up being shelved or didn’t pan out for some reason. Making a movie in Hollywood, no matter what kind, is a miracle.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a screenwriter and filmmaker. I’m not sure if I specialize in anything particularly, though I have been working in the family/feel-good space for a few years now… and truly loving it. There’s enough craziness in the world that it feels nice to bring some light to audiences. If I do have a strength as a storyteller, I think it would be bringing emotion and heart to stories. That’s my way in – if I don’t feel it, I know the audience won’t. I love bringing that out, deepening characters. Cinema is one of the best art forms to bring out emotion.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Not that I can think of!
