Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Kent.
Hi Cassandra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Before Covid, I had just been introduced to the spooky community. My family and I frequented the events as consumers then we became regulars to the point of vendors becoming familiar and friendly with us. I was already known for my gothic and alternative style and art. I was getting inspired from vendors selling their handmade items and art and thought “what can I add to the scene”. Being Native American, you don’t see the two mix often. So I thought to make my own brand and let people know that there are indigenous goths, to be able to share my culture and my passion for the style.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As an autistic person who doesn’t see the world the same way as neurodivergent people, I have to frequently ask my family and friends for help on how to navigate slowly building a business. After the loss of our mother, who had shown me beading and encouraged our culture’s identity, I felt lost but knew that she would want me to succeed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve been drawing since I was six years old, my hands have always been busy. I specialize in handmade beadwork, digital art, and traditional indigenous clothing with a goth flare. My most popular work and one I’m proud of is my brand name “Indigenous Goth” t-shirts.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I would say frequent events and talk to vendors, don’t be afraid to ask questions or advice. Small businesses are more than happy to lend a hand to their fellow consumers looking to start their own business. The Spooky Community has always been welcoming and always looked after each other.
