Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Lim.
Hi Brandon, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
One of my first words as a child was “car,” and I have had a love for them as long as I can remember. Photography was a tool I used as a ticket into the automotive community. Born, raised, and located in Los Angeles, I have been lucky to experience a wide variety of car cultures in my career. After college, I spent 5 years as a staff photographer for Motortrend and have recently gone full freelance. I’m incredibly in love with what I do, whether behind the wheel or the camera.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Because of the wonderful people I’ve met in the automotive community and the overwhelming support along the way, I am incredibly lucky to say my path has not been too difficult externally. Instead, I feel my biggest struggles were internal. For a very long time, I struggled to create my visual integrity, make work I loved, and stay motivated to continue photography as a career. I was not proud or happy with the work I created for many years. I think that’s a very normal feeling to have, and with time, I as able to find inspiration and fulfillment from my work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a photographer that specializes in the automotive industry. Whether it’s off-roading in the desert, motorsports on track, or commercial cars in the city, I love the breadth four-wheeled photography provides. I think my most unique style is the way I utilize light and shadow. I love lighting the subject in a dark, moody way to highlight the car. Putting the emphasis and light on the car makes it feel like the hero of the story, and finding the perfect background to place it is always a fun challenge.
What matters most to you?
The well-being of myself, family, and friends matter the most to me. My health suffered greatly in the last couple of years and put me out of work for a short period of time. After being humbled, I quickly realized my health is paramount to any other aspect in my life. Quality of my health and health of my loved ones comes before anything else. Listening to my body, respecting my limitations, and being kind to myself now takes precedence.
