Check Out Bob Boulding’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bob Boulding.

Hi Bob, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my music school as the next step after my years as a professional musician. During the 18 years I spent in the band Young Dubliners, I helped write and record six albums as well as arrange and play thousands of shows. My experience working with so many people made me want to teach my abilities as a guitarist to others. For continued education, I took training in the Suzuki Method of music lessons, which formed the basis for my method of teaching based on learning by ear. We now have three teachers, and our lessons include guitar and bass guitar, piano, ukulele, and vocals.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a fairly smooth road, yes. We have kept a full list of students for over seven years. One major hurdle was in the spring and summer of 2020, when the world went into isolation during the pandemic. We quickly shifted to live online lessons and regrew our roster by the latter part of that year.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a personal enrichment service, our goal is to help people connect their desire to play an instrument with abilities that we all share. We listen to music, and learn to appreciate the parts and details of songs and pieces. The student gets in-person modeling of just how the music is played or sung. Our program is different for children or adults but both benefit from learning to play by ear.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was that youngest of four kids, growing up in the 1970’s and ’80’s. My siblings were much older than me, so for all of my memory, I saw and heard music and records around the house and was attracted to the sounds and styles. We lived near the ocean so I played outside a lot, but I also spent a great amount of time playing by myself and tinkering with things at home. It was a good time to get into playing the guitar on my own — and soon enough, with friends, too.
