Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Cuadros.
Hi Anthony, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I started doodling and drawing since I was a kid. I’ve always loved it, but I let it go for a while. During my final 2 years of high school, I took some art classes and began to draw consistently again. In these courses, I developed a portfolio, which I didn’t think I could do anything with. Until it came time to choose a college to go to. My guidance counselor, Lenore, pushed me to pursue my passion for art; she was pretty pissed when I told her I was thinking of trade school… haha! Fast forward a few years. In May, I’ll be graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. I’ve been studying illustration the past 4 years, and I’ve accomplished more things than I ever thought were possible 5 years ago. Now, I draw every day, and I love every second of it. I’m so thankful for everyone who pushed me to pursue this creative dream of mine.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has most definitely not been a smooth road. I don’t think anything in life is ever on a smooth road, personally. Self-doubt, loss of motivation, fear, and financial struggles are a few bumps in the road that come to mind.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an illustrator and a muralist. I take bits and pieces from my interests, life, heritage, feelings, etc., and mash it all into my artwork. I specialize in drawing my personal experiences in life. But to be specific, some things I always come back to are BMX bikes, skateboarding, birds, nature, Colombian culture, and music. Those things and how I represent them in my artwork are what sets me apart from others because it’s the closest representation of me. Even if you don’t know me personally, through my art, you can learn a lot about me. That’s what I’m most proud of: being able to represent my unique self through my artwork and share it with the world.
What’s next?
I’m looking forward to graduating from school in May, which will definitely be a big change for me. Firstly, a light break to celebrate the past 4 years of hard work to get my BFA degree. Aside from that, I plan on making more work, large and small. I’d like to paint more murals internationally and domestically. Alongside the search for walls to paint, I’d like to paint more on canvas. I’ve been making a lot of digital work lately, so it will be refreshing to get my hands dirty again. Other than everything I’ve mentioned, the future is open and full of opportunity. I’m excited to see what is next in my journey.
