Today we’d like to introduce you to Alfredo Lopez
Alfredo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in the city of Quilpue, Chile in 1986. It all really got started back when I was 12 years of age when my uncles needed someone to play bass at there church. I can’t express enough how in love I felt with the Bass and the world of Music. Wanted to listen to everyone and everything, learn all styles and just play all day long and till this day I’m learning new things. I never was really much of a sport person so all my attention went to learning the craft of bass and music. I did really bad in school cuz I would practice 8 or 9 hrs a day everyday non-stop and yes i still manage to graduate high school (barely). didn’t have much friends other than the ones that where also into music, Jazz in particular so that means and 0 girlfriends. Im very bless that I always had full support from my family to follow my dreams and live music, maybe I should mention that my dad also is a professional musician. my fathers mom was a painter and she played accordion, my mothers mom was a well known singer in the christian world, most of my uncles and cousin play instruments and are singers so music definitely runs in the family. so my dad recommended me to play upright bass told me that, that would open more doors for work so I did, shortly after I was studying upright bass in the conservatory of “universidad de Valparaiso” in Chile and playing classical music in a youth orchestra. my teacher (Carlos Rossat) was a jazz player so he turn me into jazz where my life just became more obsessed with it and at my 16 year of age I was playing jazz in the local scene. came to the states in 2008, and the crazy thing was that I never had to do anything beside music back home but when I came here to the states I didn’t know anyone in the music business so had to work in a subway and save money to move to Boston and attend Berklee College of Music. I move to Boston after being here in California for 6 months and my idea was to be there and get my bachelors from Berklee but I change my mind for several and personal reason. so I came back to cali after a year living in Boston and enroll at LACM formerly knows as Los Angeles college of music (LAMA). these days I’m touring with Frankie Valli and the four seasons, do recordings from my home studio and play local gigs as much as I can. It was definitely a Coulter shock moving from to Chile to the US, it took me several years to get use to the way life here but I can say that besides everything what’s happening in the world today and getting to travel the world it is still the best place to live in mu humble opinion. lastly I thank God for letting me have so many wonderful and great experiences and have met so many wonderful people and musicians that ive crossed path and to let me fulfill my dream to make a living making music, very hard at times but his mercy and love keep me going.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
nothing ever will be smooth for us Musicians, its like being in pandemic mode most of the time in the sense that you never know when or where is the next gig is coming from, sure you can have a steady gig for some time but everything come to an end eventually, for me is more to be able to adapt to the current times and re-invent my self and keep learning new skills weather is different styles of music, social media or anything that is going to keep me in the loop of things and like I had mention previously the support that I had from my paternal grandparents who I grew up with was key in my upbringing as a person & musician. love you forever Nono & Lila, im sure we will meet again!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
well like I had mention at the moment im touring with Frankie Valli and the four seasons, also had an amazing opportunity in 2024 to record with the legendary Bill Ward Original drummer from the band “Black Sabbath” for his new up coming album. Want to thank Joey Heredia and Walter Earl for the recommendation and trusting in me. Also available for studio recording to anyone around the world and to travel anywhere. ive been blessed to work with musicians from all walks of life and many cultures and absolutely love learning there music and eating there’s food.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I feel the most important quality for success is being humble, listen and learn from other people. doesn’t matter if they are younger or older then you, you can learn from everyone. also consistency with hard work will definitely will push your career to a better place. To me Luck is when “Preparation meets Opportunity”, so don’t miss you opportunity by not being prepared boys and girls!
